My favorite hotel in Egypt

After two weeks and many hotels throughout Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, I was very pleasantly surprised by the fantastic Metropole in Alexandria. Situated so that it can see the glorious Alexandria harbor front, the view of the Mediterranean as you arrive is worth the price of entry alone.
And then you go inside.
You can feel the plush, rich history from every part of the hotel. From the spiraling staircase to the open-air elevator, the entire experience oozes class. The service is easily 5 stars. I've stayed at places such as the Hilton Beijing and the Waldorf in NYC, and the service here outclasses them easily. Attentive and friendly staff who take the load off your shoulders are around every corner. You will feel pampered in a way that I can only assume rich Europeans felt at the beginning of the 20th century.
The restaurant is also an incredible gem. The breakfast buffet is miles beyond what you expect, with tables of pastries, fresh fruit, juices and breads, and great Egyptian hot dishes (like fava beans).
Even if it doesn't have the '5 star amenities' that everyone never uses, personally I consider it 5 stars because of the service and decor. I highly recommend this hotel in Alexandria.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Leave an afternoon or night free so that you can just walk the Alexandria harbor (about 1 hour from end to end). It's free of tourist hassle and is one of the most calming experiences you can have. Lots of restaurants are available as well for dining so you really don't need the day planned out.

Old World Charm with modern comforts
Riding in the historic lift is an experience in itself. The friendly, hospitable staff that were on standby to see to every need.

Located in the heart of the city centre, less tha 100 metres from the Mediterranean sea. We were fortunate to be upgraded from a standard room to a deluxe room with sea view from the balcony at no extra cost. The refreshing drinks and biscuits offered on arrival were welcomed and appreciated. The satff are very knowledgeable of the area, well spoken and extremely helpful.A fruit platter was sent to our room at tea.The hotel was olde world charm with all the modern comforts.
Restaurant Tip:
There are many restarants within close proximity of the hotel. Try Farm Frites for a variety of dishes. For seafood we went to Samakmak and walked back through a night market.

my family stayed here for almost two weeks and this was the best hotel we ever stayed. they even gave me a surprise birthday cake on my birthday which was were sweet of them.
Restaurant Tip:
go to a seafood restaurant named fish market. the food is really amazing not forgetting the view of the bay

Stayed here for almost 2 weeks, one of the best hotel staff we encountered. they even gave me a surprise bithday cake. the buffet was ok, as we stayed here too long thus was bored with the food.
Shopping Tip:
there are super large carrefour with western shops that are cheaper than malaysia. had a blast in h&m and zara.

for visiting alex, there is no better location than being smack on the corniche. the metropole, right next to the famous cecil is unbeatable. not sure if this would pass as a 4 star hotel in europe or canada, but in egypt, let alone, alex, this is tough to beat. that being said, it sure was not perfect. the hotel is located in a very busy spot, and from 6pm to midnight, the honking and crowding never ends. you will need to turn on the ac fan to cover the street noise. we were in a superior room on the top floor and it still reached us. con, so be aware. personally, i sleep through everything but some are sensitive.
the room was clean, and staff as super friendly as are all alex people. those who beg to differ probably never smiled at them first. you want good service, ask with a smile. in alex, no one will say no to you with good manners.
breakfast was great. again, those who complain don't accept/expect buffet style to be a little on the lukewarm side. but there is a lot to choose from and can get eggs, omelets, and chocolate crepes on demand to the chef at task.
our train was leaving at 3pm and we weren't quite finished with visiting so we left our luggage at the hotel until 2pm, behind the creaking but safe elevator and management was fine with this. and by the way, yes the elevator: just because it is not surrounded by walls and is just riding up and down next to the staircase with mechanism for everyone to see does not make it unsafe. it's old but it runs fine. my wife and i got a kick out of it.
finally, some decoration tacky but overall feels like old luxury. nothing is really run down, just kitschy here and these. enjoy. we did.
Restaurant Tip:
Try Farouda on Corniche for fish. Go inside and point to what you want. Unbeatable? For price, yes. For taste, get in a cab and ask for Samakmak. Slightly pricier but ever-so tasty! And don't dare miss Mohammed Ahmed next door to hotel. Ask reception. You won't find the proper sign; it says Farm Frites, which is odd, because they don't sell any. Best fuul ever!!!

excellent service, all the staff are very helpful. but the elevator is out of service all the time. breakfast is excellent, serving from 7 am to 11am. very good. the bathrome is big an clean. the bed is comfortabe
