Do not go to the Nubian Villages that the guidebooks write up as "charming, shady narrow streets," etc. We relied on Lonely Planet in deciding to go and the narrative of the book was nothing like the actual experience. We were not allowed to wander on our own but had to go with the "Chief" who then wanted money for the "tour." The area has heaps of garbage with sheep and goats eating the trash. The few people we encountered were not friendly. There is nothing to see.
- Shopping Tip : This could also be a "sightseeing.attraction" tip. The local bazaar/market near the train station is an interesting evening. Learn a few words of Arabic and interact with the vendors. They're very nice but remember to bargain hard.
