The staff of the Shepheard hotel was welcoming and helpful. We paid the extra money for a room overlooking the Nile river and had a great view and balcony, well worth the money. The excursion staff in the lobby of the hotel set us up with a fun tour to the Fayoum Oasis, but we realized later it was cheaper to have a taxi drive us around for an entire day, although it was very convenient. The staff in the Business Center was able to suggest and make reservations for us at a great local restaurant. Although, the internet was way more expensive than any of the internet cafe. The rooms was cleaner than we expected them to be and it was comfortable. The only problem was, even on the eighth floor, honking from the street was very loud throughout the night.
View of the Nile, rooftop hookah bar, helpful staff, clean.
Hallways smelled like smoke. Could hear honking throughout the night.
- Restaurant Tip : No matter what you are doing, always ask the price beforehand. Do NOT assume that anything is included unless it was discussed previously.

I stayed in Shepheard Hotel for my honeymoon. It's a true 4* hotel with a great location when visiting Cairo.
If your staying there make sure you get a Nile View room. As the hotel has a busy road in front of it make sure you ask for one of the upper floors if you're a light sleeper. At least level 4 which I was on. The view also gets better the higher you are. Phone them a few days in advance to reserve your room. The standard room faces an ugly building behind the hotel and for $24/night on top of the standard price for a truly spectacular view and balcony overlooking the Nile it really has to be done.
Breakfast has the usual selection of Egyptian and European foods which is quite nice. Timings when I went were from 7.30 to 11 am. The only down side here was the service. They usually had 4-5 waiters buzzing around to assist guests (with tea, coffee etc.) however I got the feeling that a two tiered service went on depending on whether you were Egyptian or not.
Rooms were clean and changed daily. We actually had 2 double beds in ours expecting only 1. The maids do have a habit of not providing enough towels/toiletries if you don't give them an obligatory bakshish when you see them. Considering how much they make though sparing a couple of Egyptian pounds (20p in UK) really makes a difference for all parties.
Overall these were minor issues and we a had wonderful stay in the hotel. I would definitely recommend it in the future at its current price. (I paid £57/night for a Nile facing room in the end).
Nile view spectacular! Good price.
Watch for extra fees. All need to be paid in dollars not Egyptian pounds. Poor breakfast service.
- Shopping Tip : Mini-bar, peanuts etc.. in the hotel are crazily expensive. There's a newsagent about 50m down the road if you turn right out of the main entrance that provides all munchies at standard prices.
