City Bowl

Cape Town’s City Bowl district takes its name from its unique amphitheatre-like shape. Bound by the sea and backed by Table Mountain, this is essentially Cape Town's central business district and the place where visitors are most likely to be based. Accommodation in the City Bowl is situated in heart of the sightseeing district as well as on the hillsides where affluent residential neighborhoods perch.

The best thing to do in the City Bowl is join a walking tour. The city’s major architectural sites are nearer to the waterfront near Adderley Street and the Grand Parade. Built in the mid-17th century, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest colonial-era building in Cape Town. The five-sided fortress now hosts museum exhibits that explore Cape Town’s military history. Nearby is Cape Town’s City Hall, a grand Edwardian structure built from English limestone.

Green Market Square was a humble farmer’s market when it launched in the early 18th century. It has blossomed into a lively flea market in historic environs, and it’s a favorite stop for tourists who can pick up gifts or stop by a café in the late afternoon. Within walking distance of most hotels in the City Bowl, this is the best one-stop shopping destination in the district.

The City Bowl is also home to some of Cape Town’s best restaurants. What the waterfront is to shopping, the City Bowl is to gourmet dining. Cape Town’s diverse history has left a distinct mark on the local dining scene, and visitors enjoy a great selection of fusion cuisine. While there’s something in every price range, splurging in City Bowl restaurants is well worth it.
