Good view and location

Good view , food
Good location and food. The bathroom was not so clean and had a smell. The coffee spoon inside the room was not cleaned from last guest use.

Stunning location, but overpriced for what you get

location, pool, spa
I had a very relaxing week at the Amaya Hills Hotel. It's a 20 mins tuktuk ride out of the chaos of Kandy, so it feels like you are getting away from it all. The setting of the hotel, with its' terraces, pool and spa clinging onto the hillside, is tranquility on tap. Be aware that a tuktuk into Kandy will cost you anything between 600-800 rupees each way. Sadly this hotel is grossly overpriced when compared to others in Sri Lanka- a country in which food, drink and accommodation are very cheap. It clearly caters for the the wealthier tourist (package holiday or honeymooner) who has not necessarily stayed anywhere else in the country to realise they are being hugely overcharged. On arrival to my room, there was a musty damp smell coming from the air conditioning unit, no coat hangers in the wardrobe and dead batteries in the tv remote control. I had to ask for coat hangers twice. It's the simple things like this which should be right in a hotel that is charging almost £100 a night for room only. Otherwise the room was clean and comfortable. There were endless numbers of bar and restaurant staff, but the service was slow and at times bordering on terrible. Staff were pleasant, but none spoke good basic English. A hotel catering for a western market, with prices to match, should have a good level of spoken English among the staff. Another disappointment was the food. Extremely overpriced for what you got- I had to send a dessert back, because it was inedible and the chicken burger I ordered was reformed meat. There was a daily breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet (pushed as a first choice) which was 15GBP per meal- more than UK prices. Thankfully there was a snack and an al la carte menu, offering food at slightly less eye watering prices. I would add that because the Esala Perahera was taking place during the week of my stay, I suspect that the room prices of the Amaya Hills were inflated. It may be cheaper to stay at this hotel at other times of the year.

Amazing Hotel with stunning view of town but hard

Amazing view, friendly staff and good food
The hotel is located at a top of a mountain and provides a stunning view of the rolling green hills of Kandy. Upon arrival, the staff were very warm and welcoming, and gave us complimentary tea. The room's view was ok, and the room itself didn't reach the standards that we expected (such as instead of a king-sized bed, they had given us two single beds put together) nevertheless the experience was unforgettable. The wifi in the room was awful, you had to keep logging in after your phone refreshed or if you left the room, a hassle really. The breakfast buffet was very good with a gorgeous view. We tried the Spa in the hotel, and to be honest it was overly priced but the experience was good (needed the massage after a long search for the hotel!).

Nice settings with unprofessional staff

unattentive staff, no wifi, poor food services
It was not as pleasant as expected. The hotel is massive and well decorated. I was a honeymooner and given the last room of the lane. The deluxe room is quite small. There was no (mini) fridge in the room until we rang up the receptionist and asked the staff to bring up one mini fridge to the room. The wifi wasn't working at all

Very good value for the money

Great views, helpful staff, balcony off room
We looked at a number of places in this price range and found this one to be the best. If you look close you can spot a few things that show some age but overall this was a really nice place. Pool was great, bar was open till midnight, rooms were good size. We self drove so we appreciated a big safe parking lot. The afternoon monkey visits to our balcony were a highlight. Not far from downtown Kandy but about a 15 minute drive in traffic. Big supermarket, the royal mall, was very close. Food and liquor prices were a little on the high side but they gave us all the free ice we asked for. Don't forget to visit the slightly chill lounge in Kandy, formally the bamboo garden. Say hi to michael for us.
