Amphoe Mueang Chiang Rai

Amphoe Mueang Chiang Rai was the seat of the first Lanna Kingdom, and the best historic attractions in town tell the story of old Lanna kings. King Mengrai’s legacy lives on in his local monument and in the ancient temples that dot the city. Hotels in Amphoe Mueang Chiang Rai cater to adventure tourists bound for the remote north.

King Mengrai founded Chiang Rai in the 13th century, and it briefly ruled over the new Lanna Kingdom until Chiang Mai was founded a few years later. Oub Kham Museum and Prapatheep Goldland Museum explore local history, or visitors can actively tour the city to admire attractions like the clock tower and Por Khun Mengrai Monument.

The local temple, Wat Phra Kaew, once housed the emerald Buddha that now sits in Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew. Other important temples in Chiang Rai include Pratat Chomthong Temple, Ming Muang Temple, Pra Singh Temple and Klang Wieng Temple.

Another fascinating temple is south of the city center on the road that goes to Chiang Mai and Phayao. Rongkhun Temple was designed and built by a contemporary artist. Unlike any other temple in Thailand, Rongkhun Temple is sparkling white and privately funded, and visitors can support the ongoing project by purchasing artwork or souvenirs.

Chiang Rai city center is the best place to be based while touring the region. Hotels in Amphoe Mueang Chiang Rai can arrange boat trips on the Kok River or hill- tribe treks in the surrounding mountains. It’s also the best place to launch trips to the Golden Triangle, where Laos, Burma and Thailand converge on the Mekong River valley. West of the city center is Numtok Khunthong National Park, popular for its waterfall and well worth a visit.
