Rooms, reception area, fusion restaurant, friendly staff
Little away from Riverside, but not a problem
Well... if you are looking for a five star hotel, I would say it's the best value for money hotel I have stayed at in over 70 countries. Rooms were good sized, I had a twin, moved my beds together, but the one bed (4'6) was big enough for me (6 foot, 90 kilos). Air con worked well and quiet. 2 ladies at reception were the stars of the show, big beaming smiles every day, a pleasure to deal with. Nice fusion restaurant, I recommend the Pak Choi vegetables at a mere $3. There is always a smiling tuk tuk driver outside, we negotioted a nightly rate of $10, starting at 18.00 until home up till 2am, $15 to stay with us all day and night, made getting around very easy. Excellent value, will stay there again in August.
Nightlife Tip : Sharky's bar, ask for Andy the social chemist, manager. Riverside Bistro is a nice place to while away the hours. Heart of darkness or Martini bar for music and dance.

I feel like I got my money's worth at the Hotel Cara. The room was very clean and nicely decorated. The breakfast was good as well. The TV had English, French, Spanish, Thai, Chinese and (I presume) Cambodian) language channels.
I originally asked for a double bed in a non-smoking room. They first showed me a a room with one bed in it, which they called a double, and it was a smoking room. The second room had two twins, but the twin was the same size as the what they originally called a "double"! I don't think this was a matter of deceit so much as it was a matter of the staff trying to maximize their room allocation. Still, I would have liked them to give me what I asked for the first time around.
The Hotel Cara offers a good value for the money. The location is not in the center of the other hotels and restaurants, etc., but I count that as a plus in some respects. To be right in the center of the tourist traffic can often be too noisy. Besides it is only a short moto taxi ride to Wat Phnom or any of the other attractions.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Wat Phnom is only a short moto taxi ride away from this hotel. You could probably walk as well in about 10 minutes. It is a pretty good temple and many Cambodians go to just hang out around the hill. You may find that you meet people there who want to practice their English. It costs $1.
About money, the currency of choice is US dollars. They often give you change in Cambodian riel (exchange rate varies from 4000 to 4200 riel to the dollar). Interestingly, the ATM machines dispense in dollars. Also, there is only a $2 ATM transaction fee in Cambodia (at least at the terminal that I used) compared with $5 per transaction in Thailand. (That $5 fee in Thailand is across the board at all banks.)

It is good hotel, but if you get deluxe room. The standard room doesn't have window and is small.
Few pubs around, but distant from the city centre
