The Double Happiness Courtyard Hotel is a beautiful hotel in the hutongs of Beijing. The hotel and its courtyards are beautifully decorated. There are even birds out in the entry in the mornings. The breakfast is amazing... a huge spread with some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. The staff are excellent and helped us with so many things like calling taxis, translating place names for us to give to taxi drivers in other cities, and letting us keep our bags there after we checked out. A big plus also was the free Wifi.
I had a few problems though with this hotel. I know that beds are notoriously hard in China, but this was ridiculous. It was by far the hardest, most uncomfortable bed during our 2-week stay in China, and we even slept in trains. Also the hotel seemed a bit pricey. It wasn't extremely pricey but it was kind of expensive for China. The good points outweighed the bad, though. I would stay here again. We really enjoyed our walks through the hutong to and from the hotel. Not very easy for taxis to drive around in though.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The Dongsi subway station is a short walk outside the alley and is next to WuMart, before McDonald's.

this hotel is close to a subway stop, giving easy access to most parts of the city without having to negotiate with taxi drivers. it is down a hutong and this keeps city noise to a minimum while at the same time giving you a flavor of the hutong experience without needing a "hutong tour". the design and decoration of the hotel are in a traditional chinese style that you won't get in hotel chains. the breakfast was varied, tasty and local.
there was nothing i disliked. the hotel is old and so it is not polished. paint is chipped and walls and furnishings are antiques so could be judged by some as needing refurbishment. if you want a modern, clean, organized, and tidy hotel you might be put off by this one.
if you stay in a holiday inn you could be anywhere in the world and not know where you are. when you stay at the double happiness hotel you know you are in china. do not stay here if you like order and polish. if you want a good dose of chinese character and atmosphere, this is a fabulous place. i will be staying here again.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : near to palace museum and subway

We had a very nice experience , the service was great and the breakfast was even better!!!!! We were within walking distance of local shopping as well as local restaurants.
Our room was very small, just enough space for a bed and a bathroom. The room needed more space for baggage and for dressing.
We visited the hotel in September, 2009 and would stay there again. We have recommended the hotel to our friends. This hotel is best suited for people interested in history. It is decorated and furnished in old China style. We enjoyed our stay. The staff was very helpful in arranging our tour of Beijing.

- Decent breakfast selections
- Plenty of restaurants and eating outlets to choose from
- Location is accessible to other attractions
No shelter at the staircase area. If it rains, it's kind of inconvenient if you stay on the 2nd level.
After going through the reviews from other travellers, we had decided to choose this hotel.
The rates are considered slightly above-average priced. But for a comfortable stay, I think it's kind of worth it. Hotel amenities were always replenished (oh, and the slippers are definitely of much better quality (cotton) than the average western-style hotels (paper)).
They upgraded us to a bigger room cuz they ran out of twin bedrooms at the day when we checked in. It's a pleasant surprise, both bedroom and bathroom were huge, and our room comes with a balcony. Unfortunately, we didn't really use it, cuz it's been raining those few days and weather's slightly cold.
The hotel served pretty decent selection of both chinese and western-style breakfast. Though the breakfast hours ended at around 9.30am, they won't really chase people away if they stayed beyond that time. We were slightly late on a couple of mornings, but still managed to grab a good breakfast.
I guess the only drawback during our stay was: If you stay on the 2nd level, there's no shelter at the staircase area. If it rains, it's kinda inconvenient, cuz you'll either have to run upstairs or get a little wet. Also, the carpet on the staircase gets wet as well. But it's not really a major issue, since you don't always stay in the hotel.
All in all, the hotel is well located (nearest subway is not extremely close by, but still within walking distance, about 10mins or so) and staff are really helpful and nice. I would definitely recommend my friends to this hotel.
Restaurant Tip : Nice vegetarian restaurant along a valley just across the road from "Yong He Gong Lamasery".

Very friendly and helpful staff, Chinese ambience (hotel and neighborhood).
Single room somewhat small.
Small two-story hotel with Chinese-style courtyards and Chinese decor located in traditional Chinese hutong. Very friendly, helpful English-speaking staff; provided temporary room for early 8:30am arrival; helped locate bike store, bank, restaurants etc.
Room came with safe, fridge, free internet; air conditioning unit is strong yet quiet and comes with a remote control.
Buffet-style breakfast from 7am to 9:30am.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Exercise tip:
Swim at the Olympic Pool ("Water Cube") daily except Monday 2pm-9pm (last admission 7pm).
Rent a mountain bike at a bike store on the main
street near hotel (DongSi North Street), east side, about 200 meters north of DongSiSiTaio alley (120 Yuan for 3 days plus 600 Yuan deposit).

Courteous staff, convenient and safe location, comfortable environment, nice and clean rooms, bathroom facilities are good, authentic feel
The breakfast spread although is good, the taste of the food is not too good. It's either too sweet or tasteless or too dry.
The hotel rates are pretty steep. If the room rates can be reduced lower by another 25%, believe it will attract alot of tourists to stay there.
I enjoyed my stay at the hotel very much. The staff are courteous and very helpful. The location of the hotel is good and safe - about 7 min walk from Dongsi subway station, and walking in the alley on the way to the hotel at night say around 10pm is still safe. This was because there is a police post near the hotel and there are many small provision shops and restaurants that operate till midnight.
The rooms are clean and bathroom facilities are good. We had booked a luxury suite and the staff provided us a wedding suite with a balcony - one of the 2 rooms that they have with balcony. We were pleasantly surprise with this thoughtful arrangement.
Restaurant Tip : We chanced upon a nice and cosy restaurant that serves Yunnan cuisine whilst walking in the alley back to the hotel. I would recommend this restaurant because the staff are courteous, food taste good, price is cheap and has a nice ambience.

Wonderful staff, quiet, peaceful, and traditional style setting.
The breakfast could have used a little more variety.
I had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The staff were very kind, and helpful, and spoke English very well. They gave me helpful advice, and clear instructions when needed. The hotel has a great traditional Chinese style, which was important for me. The courtyard provided a nice, quiet place to relax. All in all, I would say that this hotel is a great choice for anyone staying in Beijing.
Travel tip : The hotel is in a great, traditional area of Beijing. It is surrounded by great little shops, and a view of real Chinese life. I would recommend checking out the different food vendors and restaurants, as well as the shops all around the hotel. The small markets actually have very good prices, so you don't need to go to a bigger store.

Bathroom has strong moldy stench.
Long walk from the main street.
Hotel renovations.
We went for the honeymoon suite. We were very impressed with the interior design and decoration. However, the moldy smell is very strong and we have to keep our bathroom door closed. That really ruins the setting.
The buffet breakfast was good. Wide selection of chinese/western food.
The hotel is situation in the middle of a hutong street. So it is a fair walk from either direction. Passable by small car, impossible with bigger vehicles.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : 15 minute walk to metro station.

clean, good range of breakfast foods, great bathroom.
tiny room, no English TV.
The hotel is situated in a hutong and at first you wonder if you've done the wrong thing. But, it's very traditional with fantastic furniture and some of the rooms are great (but ours wasn't - it was tiny) but the bathroom was lovely. Quiet location in a good location but quite a hike to the train.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The hotel organised a taxi to the great wall. A set price (which was probably higher than flagging a taxi) but we felt very safe and comfortable with this driver. Well worth the extra cost.

staff is very nice (seem to be very happy, level of English is excellent), lovely rooms, nice location, bath tub, nice Chinese decoration
breakfast (not many choices, breakfast room is very small, but since you are forced to share a table with other guests, you come easily in contact with other people), not many English TV, noise of other (Chinese) guests in the morning in front of our door, noise of water at night by the drainage system might be bothersome
Only stayed there for one night, just to try out a Hutong Hotel.
Attitude of staff when checking in / out was great (smiling, even it was 0.30AM at check in, perfect English! Both, which is not often to be find in China..).
At breakfast (quite Chinese style), there was a chef present all the time, to make sure that there is enough food (he was preparing fresh dumplings, which were very yummy!!).
I would definitely recommend this hotel as it really brings you "happiness". In case you plan to stay several days there, the limited choices at breakfast / of English TV channels could be a problem.

Location, free internet tillgägligt at the reception, nice staff, fresh rooms with all the accessories.
Small breakfast room, all was not enough room.
To get a sense of "old time" residents of Beijing can ag recommend an overnight stay at the Double Happiness Courtyard hotel. There are still hutonglivet with small eateries, shops and the Chinese capital's daily lives just outside the port. The hotel is clean and have a small but fully equipped rooms in the cozy environment. The staff is friendly and helps to organize what you need. The hotel is also located centrally and is walking distance to metro, shopping streets and example Lama Temple.
Shopping Tip : The small shops in major streets are well worth visiting.
