Small size, locality, quiet, friendliness, quirkiness of rooms, a refreshing change from the sterility of standard 'chain' hotels
Can sometimes be a problem getting a taxi to come direct to the hotel because of the narrow access road, but even so it is only about a 5 minute walk from the main road. The 'small' rooms are quite small so if staying for more than a day or two it is better to opt for the much larger 'executive' ones. The dining room is rather small when the hotel is full.
Situated in the old Hutong district this small courtyard hotel makes you feel you are in a traditional Chinese guest house, an experince which is not always obtained in a large 'chain' hotel. Although relatively close to the main tourist areas it is a haven of peace and the staff are friendly and only too anxious to please, speaking good English.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The subway station is only a short walk away from which major tourist attractions are accessible for a fare of 2 yuan

True hutong experience.
Traditional architecture and furnishing with modern amenities.
Close to subway station (5 min walk).
Friendly and helpful staff.
Hard to find if you don't speak or read Chinese. Most taxi drivers don't know where that hutong is. I printed a map ahead of time for the driver.
There is no need for a hutong tour when you can stay at one in a blue-collar neighborhood. Most of families there share an outdoor communal toilet. You get to see what everyday life looks like for the hutong people as you walk out to the main street. Neighborhood after neighborhood of hutongs have been marked with "Chai" (tear down) for demolition to make room for tasteless new buildings. Hurry up before they are all gone.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : We did a 6-mile hike along an unrestored and quiet section of the Great Wall from Jin Shan Ling to Si Ma Tai which was the highlight of our stay in Beijing. The hotel arranged the transportation.

After living in high rises for weeks in Xianghai, I found the Hutong a welcome change. The staff is on it, their English is fine and they are friendly. I liked being able to just chill out in the hutong, I mean there is not a lot to do but veg out, and you know if that is you. Chilling out, reading a book, TV off (they do have TVs), hangin' in the courtyard drinking some tea. The room were lovely. We stayed in the regular and the super suite, and I really thought they were both just fine. I was not there for extravagance, so I appreciate both equally (the suite has like 4x the space).
I had a feeling they messed up my reservation, and when I arrived and confirmed so, I was disappointed, because I was asked to take a different room the first night. The moved everything for me while I was out so that was ok. The breakfast is kinda grody, but you can walk 15 yards around the corner for a tasty little Bao. Finding this place is tough, and you can not rely on Taxi drivers to help...as a matter of fact they will likely turn you down when asked to drive to the hotel. Finally, I thought it was expensive...I mean the overhead is LOW, and the amenities are LEAN, so you are paying a lot for little (which for many is exactly what you may want, to go without the 50 story granite skyscraper with painful lighting and homogenous ambiance).
So, I would recommend finding your way there first. A GPS could help, or just get into the area and ask someone. People are very kind and willing to help. NExt, get one of the smaller rooms, save your money to play. Rent a couple of their bikes and get a move on (the city is way huge) - but don't take them the day you go to Forgotten City and other features...just for city cruising. Within the Hutong you can get most of what you will need, so pump some money in for those locals there...generation of family will be turned out when that Hutong is raized (someday soon I suspect). I got my laundry done, ate at many of the restaurants, shopped at the grocery stores and bought pastries. Very quaint and cool.
Restaurant Tip : You don't have to leave the block to find great food. Don't waste time going to big expensive places...your finest experience will be to eat where the locals eat.
