Great location on Shamian Island. Near underground station.Something a little different to the international chain hotels.
The Victory is a characterful and comfortable hotel in one of the more pleasant parts of Guangzhou. As a frequent visitor to GZ I have tried many hotels but now routinely use the Victory. I have never had a problem getting a non-smoking room, the rooms are spacious, clean and good value. The beds are soft - something of a rarity in China.
Travel tip : This hotel doesn't have all the 5 star features. Use those at the White Swan Hotel nearby.

Friendly service, soft beds, good selection of tv channels, convenience stores nearby, Subway sandwich store nearby, 10-15mins walk to the subway station
Smoke smoke and more smoke..the lobby will sometimes be smoky or the room adjoining will have people smoking, making your room smell of smoke and this happens near your bed time... drainage problems --> when you shower the water will not go down so you'll be up to your ankles in your own filthy water
Overall experience is not too bad. If you are a smoker then you'll have no problems but for me a room smelling of smoke when I sleep is a major issue. I have been to the hotel several times and the drainage for the bathtub is still an issue, this happens for the superior room. I stayed at the business room before and found no such problems. Other than that staying at this hotel is a joy with friendly service, safe environment around the hotels and nearby amenenties. Definitely a good stay, for those who want to avoid the above problems I would suggest to stay at the business rooms for a slightly bigger fee. Definitely a quality stay for such prices.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : There are a lot of statues and sceneries around the hotels to take pictures of. You will see a lot of pre-weds taking their wedding pictures around the hotel

Good price, nice location, nice large rooms.
Not very clean. The bathroom/tub/shower tiles could really use some bleach. Lots of mildew in the tile grout.
The hotel is a great price. The rooms are big and comfortable, staff is efficient. The bathroom tub/shower areas are in need of serious cleaning with some bleach, however. We have stayed her a few times while in Guangzhou on adoption trips, and have not had any problems. When we stayed here two years ago, it was much cleaner, though.
Restaurant Tip : Take a cab to Danny's Bagels when homesick for REAL American food. Lucy's, within walking distance on the island, has semi-American food, as well.

It is away from the hustle and bustle, get the holiday feeling just walking around the island, about 2.5km. Seee Tai Chi along the river..
If you are not married and with a girlfriend, be aware wedding shoots ALL around, bout 20 couples a day..
Serene island, old school hotel, previous reviews mentioned it smelt "musty", but you are close to the river and you forget the smell within moments. Great rooms, awesome breakfast, have the wonton soup - best I've had in China. Taxi's are cheap to shopping areas, and the MTR within walking distance to go to waterpark, a must. Was great not to be in middle of town. Go to Lucy's in the evening for drinks and huge portions of food. Great chinese/thai restaurants as well. Adaoption agency on island so see many mixed families. Great!!
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Take MTR, will enjoy getting out of the sun in summer. Billiards table on 3rd floor for those evenings you dont feel like going out..

Room Size : spacious bedroom with additional sitting/tv room. Ample storage and hanging for clothes. Computer Facility: free use of computer. TV: wide range of channels. Room Service : exellent. Breakfast: superb complimentary breakfast with great variety of foods. Service: general service in the Hotel is of a high standard. Facilities: wide range including sauna, pool, etc
Pool: pool cleanliness was a little below par
I found the Guangdong Victory Hotel a wonderful surprise on my return visit to China. Situated in an area close to shops, businesses, sightseeing and transport, I was able access all I needed from this friendly Hotel. A great attitude from all staff members made my stay an enjoyable, pleasant, and successful one.
Restaurant Tip : I found it extremely difficult selecting food at many restaurants. Take a friend who can speak the language and knows the local cuisine.

This is in an area of town with European influence in architecture and dining styles. There are lots of trees and parkways close to the hotel for a quiet stroll, even though it is in a busy traffic area....which is characteristic of most of Guangzhou.
There was nothing that I didn't like. Some of the food served at the restaurant was "prettier" than it tasted. I found the location a little far from other activities that I was planning on (but taxis and the subway can get you there).
This area of town is especially welcoming and inviting toward people from other lands. There is a "friendship garden" with many cute and clever statues along some of the boulevards that gets this point across.

For those wanting to catch TV in English, whether for news or some other entertainment station, this hotel has access for it. Others do not.
All of the food is attractive in appearance, though some of it a little less tasty. The hotel is in a less central location than some of the others.
I was planning to be in Guangzhou for over a week, and planned to change hotels later to be closer to the bus station at the city center. Because of the courtesy and prompt attention of the staff at Victory Hotel, however, I (extended my stay for another day. It really does help that they speak English well and are able to give accurate information to find my way around town.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : A short walk will take you to the ferry dock where you can purchase a ticket to ride the Pearl River for 2 RMB for a 20 minute ride to the port at Sun Yat Sen University (or perhaps a little more if you go farther).

The staff was courteous and very aware of special needs of foreign visitors. Most have a good command of English and can provide accurate and reliable information for getting around town on one's own.
The hotel is farther away from my friends and areas of personal interest than I thought. But this is only my issue and is not something the hotel can "do" any differently.
There was a problem at first launching the internet for my room. One person came the first night and spent quite a bit of time on it. They sent a letter the next day to apologize and offered to send another individual at my convenience to ensure complete "victory" over the matter. There were no problems after that.
Shopping Tip : I chose this hotel because it was close to the Quingping market, which I wanted to experience. It was a fascinating aray of goods. Check it out in any guidebook or Google it for more information!

Great hotel for the money. Staff speaks English well. Comfortable beds and quaint area.
The only issue we had with the hotel is that it looks a little "run down" in areas. Old carpet in the hallways and such.
Staff was courteous and helpful. Spoke English well. Food in the restaurant was like any other "China coffee shop" - just okay. Restaurant was clean. Rooms were clean. Beds very comfortable by "China standards". Nice pillows. Quaint area. Would stay there again and would recommend it. German restuarant around the corner was within walking distance (about 2 blocks) and was very good. They spoke English well there too.
Shopping Tip : Liwan Plaza is about a 10 minute cab ride and is a mega jewelry shopping complex. Five floors of jewelry stores that sell retail and wholesale. Buy 10 or more pieces to get a great discount. You can bargin the prices with them. You can buy pearls, natural stones, crystals and jewelry findings in bulk.

price, proximatey to medical facility for visa processing, comfortable bed (surprisingly, Shamian Island, complimentary internet
Reasonably priced, but don't expect "Swan Hotel" amenities. Surprisingly the beds are comfortable (actually more so then the Swan Hotel). The breakfast is not much to rave about, but then it is less than half of a resort hotel. This is not a hotel you go to for the swimming pool. There are restaurants w/i walking distance (be brave - try the Malaysian one down the street) or an outstanding choice is La Dolce Vita Italian Restaurant - walking distance away - OUTSTANDING. And there is a Starbucks nearby as well. ... The two best features are the fact it is on Shamian Island - what a fantastic location in a big city - this island is so cool just to walk around -- and the fact that you can walk to the medical facility (less than two blocks) if you are there for a visa processing or child adoption.

Location, walking distance to Liwan district. In the middle of the city but because of its location quit.
A little bit old building and no nightlife...
All rooms are smoked in...
I stayed here several times and enjoyed my stay. The assistant manager is his weight worth in gold. The staff are willing to assist, although sometimes a little limited by their own rules. The rooms are spacious enough and internet is available at no charge. The bathrooms are old and could do with refurbishing. The beds are very comfortable and I love the four pillows. Laundry and room service are really overpriced, laundry is cheap outside though and plenty of restaurants available in the area, mini bar has enough space for your own drinks.
Staff does not know what the "do not disturb" sign means they will call you on the phone asking if you want laundry done or room cleaned, even with the sign up...
All in all good value for the price.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : A few meters away from the hotel their is a Chinese Medicine center, doctors can give you a check up or help with any ailments and can give you therapy.
Or you can just enjoy one of the many massage types they offer, also perfect for groups, they have big rooms where everybody can have foot massage at the same time, perfect after a day of shopping...

Central Location on the beautyful Shamian Island, low buidling structure, excellent places to eat nearby, nearby stop for bus back to Hongkong
The staff could be a touch more friendly, rooms are spacious - but bathroom facilities desperately need refurbishment, internet connectivity was randomly available
The Victory Hotel (old, eastern Building) is a budget place to stay, if you like old Canton and Shamian Island. If you know your way around, you are just a ten minutes walk away from the pedestrian zone at Shipu and its many traditional teas houses and local delicay. You will also find nice clothing shops and metro stops not far away.
Restaurant Tip : The Xin Li Zhi Wan Restaurant(Shanan Branch) 新荔枝湾酒楼(沙南店) hat a nice pidgeon and chicken in salted water.

Location, on Shamian Island, with its distinctly European architecture and leafy, laid back feel.
very comfortable bed
Very dirty carpet
Stale smell in the room
The property was of average standard- way overpriced for hotels in China, considering the age of the room and hotel facilities, but Ok for an international standard. The staff spoke reasonable English and were well versed on the city- which it seems, is what your paying more for.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Stay on Shamien Is when in Guangzhou- its by far the nicest part of the city.

Great price. Wonderful desk help. Doorman takes the license number of your arriving/departing taxi in case there is a problem. Internet in the room at no charge.
None, considering the price. No breakfast at the price.
As above, best price in Guangzhou through Agoda. Located in historic Shamian section with great shopping and restaurants. Room well-appointed and large enough. Very soft and comfortable mattress. Doorman takes the license number of arriving/departing taxi in case of lost articles and/or other problem. Ask to stay in the main building. We had a standard business room.
Hotel Feature Tip : You can even get ice from room service!

Good location. Very helpful.
Little pricey for the breakfast buffet.
We stayed here one night. We initially were given a room with two single beds. When we asked for a double bed, we were given one on the eighth floor with a view of the Pearl River... no questions asked. The staff was helpful, though wished there were a few more available at check-in. The breakfast buffet was very good, wonderful omelettes, but was a bit overpriced at 68 RMB. Overall, a great place to stay on Shamian Island!
