Great breakfast with lots of variety, very helpful personalized service for families with little ones, central location (downtown Kunming), A tad pricey for the average international traveler, wish they had a pool! We are really glad we decided to stay at the New Era even though it's a bit pricier than the average decent hotel in China. The central location (getting a cab right outside was always pretty easy), the personalized service (we got milk and fruit for our daughter every day for free, and even a stuffed animal from the attendant!), the great breakfast options, and the clean and modern rooms made it worth the extra money. Plus booking on Agoda was super easy. The only things we would change are the prices (wishful thinking probably) and to install a pool. One time a maintenance worker was nailing down a piece of carpet while my daughter was napping so I asked him to wait 1/2 hour and he obliged in a very apologetic manner--I couldn't believe it! Very impressed with the service.
Hotel Feature Tip : If you've got a baby they bring you milk every day, but if you don't need that, they can substitute orange juice or yogurt for milk--which our daughter preferred! Also for English speakers you can request an English-language newspaper instead of the Chinese one. Just ask!

Centrally located, right in the shopping/walking district. Decent choice at breakfast. Ask for the duty manager if you want someone who speaks some English. Chaotic lobby with large groups milling about. Reasonably priced mid-range hotel in a good central location. You could do worse.

This hotel is really amazing, the staff is really helpful and warm, the rooms and facilities are in great shape, the breakfast is delicious and it is in a great area with lots within walking distance. The staff doesn't speak a whole lot of English but they team up if necessary to make sure you get what you need...with a smile! We decided to stay at the New Era while passing through Kunming on our way to Dali. We didn't really have high expectations but were more than pleasantly suprised. The staff went out of their way to help us. The rooms were very comfortable and new. The area around the hotel is great for walking around and with lots of restaurants. New Era also booked our bus tickets to Dali and helped us to get to the bus station. Even the breakfast was great...lots of great selection from Chinese to Japanese to Western...yum!
Restaurant Tip : There is an AMAZING restaurant a few blocks away called 1910 La Gare Du Sud. Great menu with photos in a really beautiful and tranquil setting. I wish I lived closer so I could go regularly!

central, shopping area, clean, nice staff expensive for a 4 star hotel Definitely a recommendation as central of shopping complex. Use this hotel as starting point for exploration of Kunming city. The front desk staff are very nice and polite. Clean and efficient. Nice spacious room. Pleasant breakfast. However it is rather pricey for a 4 star hotel. If location is not so important, other hotels are better value for money. Near the market, night market, museum and Carrefour.

Good central location in main shopping area. Pleasant and helpful front desk. Free airport transfer from hotel.
Nice clean room-4 star. A bit pricey compared to other hotels with better facilities. The hotel is a great place to be if you like shopping and exploring Kunming on your own. Next to a big square. Directly north is a tree lined pedestrian mall leading to the Green lake. Directly West from the square is a road leading to the Provincial Museum ( about 1 km). Just a bit further from the Provincial Museum is the night market of Kundu. If you walk directly east from the square,you will see Carrefour and lots of eating place and shops. Directly south from the central square, after crossing a big road, you will find the Hump hostels and lots of old shops and some pubs.
Please note that most hotels including this hotel will quote you exorbitant price when you enquire at the counter. However, they will immediately give you an on the spot discount of 50%.This is still about20% higher than the internet price.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The bird and flower market north east of the central square and nearby.

Location Spacious quality and variety of breakfast Low level of English staff Located in a high tower in the heart of the pedestrian and shopping area of Kunming. Room very spacious and quiet. Breakfast buffet as tasty as gargantuan. The only drawback we had a hard time understanding us and vice versa, the Concierge and Reception staff do not speak English very well.
Travel tip : We spent just one night in Kunming, because we went directly to the next Dali. City without much interest in our opinion. A bit disappointing.
