Nice staff. Interesting history.
Bund is under repair, rooms were smelly from paint and not in great condition.
The management of this hotel was much nicer in the past. I think they need to be a little more customer-friendly and provide the nicer rooms when available.
Restaurant Tip : Get food at some of the locale markets.

There were many things about the Astor that my wife and I enjoyed. First and foremost, however, was the decor. We felt as if we had been transported back to old Shanghai. The room service was good and very affordable and the staff was friendly and obliging.
I think the only thing I would have preferred would have been better entertainment venues. If the Peacock room had been opened for formal dining and dancing in the evening, the place would have been perfect.
As I said, the service was excellent, the pricing was reasonable and the decor was outstanding. There are many upscale modern hotels in Shanghai but only one Astor House. My wife and I were housed in room 410, the room President U.S. Grant stayed in during his around-the-world tour in 1879. As an Historian, whose focus for the past twenty years has been the American Civil War, I couldn't have asked for a better room. The management of the Astor House, however, needs to capitalize on the unique features of the hotel and market to those wishing to experience old Shanghai and its incredible history and culture. There are a lot of us.

The old world feel to the hotel, the lobby and the porters
the reception staff were rude and generally unhelpful, the location was not great - particularly with all of the construction going on at the Bund
This hotel has a lot of charm about it, but seems to be having an identity crisis - they have changed the name of it three times! They should really focus on the basics - friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms and good breakfasts. They are lacking in all of these areas. When we arrived we were initially very impressed with the look of the hotel, but unfortunately the staff really let us down. Initially I thought it was a language barrier, but this is simply not the case - they are just not willing to help! They made a real fuss about us having a king size bed rather than a twin and at one point tried to charge us more, even though the two rooms are the same price. I thought that this was quite sneaky and left a bad taste. They didn't improve their service, and rather than extending our stay here we moved to another place, which was only slightly more expensive but with significantly better facilities and friendly staff. The porters at the Astor House were very sweet and helpful though, and their Scottish kilts are cute! I wouldn't stay here again though.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The Urban Planning Museum was surprisingly interesting. It was fascinating to see what they plan for Shanghai in the future.
