There were many things about the Astor that my wife and I enjoyed. First and foremost, however, was the decor. We felt as if we had been transported back to old Shanghai. The room service was good and very affordable and the staff was friendly and obliging.
I think the only thing I would have preferred would have been better entertainment venues. If the Peacock room had been opened for formal dining and dancing in the evening, the place would have been perfect.
As I said, the service was excellent, the pricing was reasonable and the decor was outstanding. There are many upscale modern hotels in Shanghai but only one Astor House. My wife and I were housed in room 410, the room President U.S. Grant stayed in during his around-the-world tour in 1879. As an Historian, whose focus for the past twenty years has been the American Civil War, I couldn't have asked for a better room. The management of the Astor House, however, needs to capitalize on the unique features of the hotel and market to those wishing to experience old Shanghai and its incredible history and culture. There are a lot of us.

The old world feel to the hotel, the lobby and the porters
the reception staff were rude and generally unhelpful, the location was not great - particularly with all of the construction going on at the Bund
This hotel has a lot of charm about it, but seems to be having an identity crisis - they have changed the name of it three times! They should really focus on the basics - friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms and good breakfasts. They are lacking in all of these areas. When we arrived we were initially very impressed with the look of the hotel, but unfortunately the staff really let us down. Initially I thought it was a language barrier, but this is simply not the case - they are just not willing to help! They made a real fuss about us having a king size bed rather than a twin and at one point tried to charge us more, even though the two rooms are the same price. I thought that this was quite sneaky and left a bad taste. They didn't improve their service, and rather than extending our stay here we moved to another place, which was only slightly more expensive but with significantly better facilities and friendly staff. The porters at the Astor House were very sweet and helpful though, and their Scottish kilts are cute! I wouldn't stay here again though.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The Urban Planning Museum was surprisingly interesting. It was fascinating to see what they plan for Shanghai in the future.

Location. Friendly, English speaking staff. Well appointed.
The hotel faces a main road with high traffic volume so avoid low rooms towards the front, or bring earplugs as you will hear the cars and the honking.
Air conditioning seems to be on a cycle and sometimes appears to turn off. However, staff responded immediately when I informed them of this.
There is some construction near the hotel in preparation for the 2010 Shanghai Expo but it is temporary and you won't really hear it. You'll just see it when you leave the hotel.
This is a lovely hotel with an amazing history. It is, in fact, the first Western hotel in China which dates back to 1846. It is elegant and charming in Victorian baroque style with a beautiful lobby. The staff is very friendly, speak English, and very responsive and helpful. The formal dining Peacock Room is superb and where an excellent breakfast is served. They even have a cappuccino machine; a rarity in China. And very reasonably priced for the location.
The rooms are clean and the hotel is well kept. Although the hotel is old, it has been brought up to date with new bathrooms and modern amenities such as high speed internet. In the front lobby, there is a great area for lounging and having drinks, tea or coffee.
The location is excellent, right in The Bund, across the street from the Baidu Bridge, which offers a perfect view of the Pudong side. Also, a short walk to Nanjing Road. All in all it's a great place to stay for business or leisure travelers. PS If you have teenagers, stay in Pudong, which is newer and hipper.

Atmosphere, sense of ,history, age of building, spacious rooms
The hotel is is grand but has seen better days and is full of atmosphere and a sense of history. The location is great for walking on the Bund, especially with the bridge being open. The rooms we stayed in were huge and reasonably priced. Breakfast was good with a large choice of both western and chinese food. The staff were helpful and cheerful.
Hotel Feature Tip : We stayed in the room Chou En Lai and his wife reputedly hid in to escape execution by the Nationalists - given his role in Chinese history this made quite an impression on us

Great Staff
Good Location
Currently beside a construction site
The hotel is very nice. The staff particularly exceeded expectations. The porters did more than carry your luggage and open doors. They would immediately ask if they can call a cab for you and inform your driver of your destination. The room was spacious and very clean. I would definitely stay here again given the chance.

- interesting architecture
- very friendly staff (the bellboys helped us hail cabs every single time)
- very big bathroom
- creaky wooden floor
- signal for television is weak
- near the bund (gotta walk for 15 mins min.), but not immediately near anywhere at all!
It was overall a good stay at Astor House Hotel just that we were freaked out by the creaky floor and scary hallwalls the first day we reached. Television was prety good with a variety of channels including english ones but the signal was weak. I couldnt watch it for a couple of hours straight. Staff were all quite friendly though. However, since it is quite out of the way, I dont think many people would enjoy it although cab fare in Shanghai is cheap.

Friendly staff who mostly speak some English. Deluxe rooms were big and had character, with comfortable beds and nice bathrooms for a reasonable price.
Currently next to a construction site
This is not a luxury hotel (and doesn't have that much in the way of facilities) but it has character and history and is right on the northern end of the Bund, near an area that still looks like old Shanghai (though this may disappear fairly soon). The deluxe rooms had very comfortable beds and decent bathrooms with natural light. The staff are used to dealing with tourists from overseas, and mostly speak some English. The buffet breakfast was ok, but if it's not included in your rate, it is (like most hotel buffets) not worth the price tag - better food is available in any restaurant nearby at a much cheaper price.\n\nI would stay here again.

Historical place with big rooms and planty of space. let you feel relax
the floor parque is rough and not flat . there is little bad smell in the rooms
It is a good experience to be in this historical place with its good location near to most shopping places . The hotel needs improvements regarding the service and outlets like more restaurants and entertainments . It is a good value for the money we spend

Excellent service. Spacious, clean rooms. Inexpensive internet and telephone a plus. Good TV (several English channels).
The hotel personnel were always helpful. The rooms were comfortable, which was nice on a rainy day. Cab service always available. Close the The Bund and the East Nanjing Street shopping mall.
Restaurant Tip : New Heights Bar on The Bund for excellent views of Pudong and the Huangpu River, especially at night.

Like winning a lottery, I tried browsing a hotel in Shanghai from several info website.
Agoda provides much enough information; area & location, hotel photos, facilities, easily searchable, price attractive, instant reservation.
Checking-in smoothly, I was impressed with a warm welcome. Getting to the room, it's surprising to a very large and comfortable room.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : - The Bund
- Nanjing Lu (shopping & walking street)
- Oriental TV Tower (The signature)

As an executive room was unavailable on our first evening we were upgraded for a night to an executive suite which had the most amazing views of The Bund. Highly recommend the restaurant both for value and service.
Nightlife Tip : ON PUDONG: Visit the Grand Hyatt in the Jin Mao Tower for all day eating & viewing in the Grand Cafe then adjoin to Cloud 9 for great views, wine, cocktails & cheese platter. Eat dinner at the revolving restaurant in the Oriental Pearl Tower & enjoy a comprehensive food choice along with the fabulous views.

It is a good idea to consider the celebrity rooms. We took a "normal" room but seeing afterwards that it would not have cost much more to have stayed in the same room with Einstein we regretted it, a little bit.
Restaurant Tip : This hotel is very near to one of the restaurant streets(walking distance). To the northeast from the hotel. (I don´t remember the name of the street but it is marked on many maps.)
