Conviently located next to Nanjing walking street, the metro and peoples square. The value for the area is excellent
The restaurant is very expensive, there is no bar in the hotel and there is aot of panhandlers in the area.
When we checked in we asked for an upgrade to executive, before making a decision we were able to view both rooms, standard and executive. Both were comparable in size and decor. Although we did chose the executive for the larger bathroom with separate tub and walkin shower. The rooms were very clean and housekeeping was very fast to accomodate requests. The executive rooms are only on floors 7-9 and so we compromised on the view. Most of the staff spoke english and the hotel customer service manager was extremely helpful with directions and suggested sights.

Very expensive restaurant
The 1/2 day rate is too expensive for what you get - 400 Yuan for 4 hours
Overall a pretty good hotel but I didnt fnd the staff particularly friendly. Restaurant was ridiculously expensive - 98 Yuan for most buffet meals. A late check o0ut to 6pm was 400 Yuan, whi9ch at 1/2 the day rate wa spoor vlaue for money. Room was nice and I was upgraded to a junior suite due to overbooking.

Location, Service and clean.
Lobby is crowded with smokers.
The Central Hotel is ideally located and easy to get to. Getting a taxi here, like most of Shanghai can be a challenge. Easier to get a texi at the Howard Johnson's and sofitel nearby.
People's Square is nearby and there are many restaurants around. Good shopping nearby too.
Travel tip : Try not to get out at night. Area crawls with panhandlers.

Location, Rooms, General Service, Relax center / Gym
Internet access (very slow), Standard of Restaurants - especially dinner buffet
I normally stay at Central hotel when I visit Shanghai, mainly beacause the cost is reasonable related to the convenient location, good relax center and standard of Breakfast buffet. I also think the overall service is good and most of the rooms are in good shape. What is not so good is the Internet access and possibilities to get a dinner meal at reasonable cost. The dinner buffet is in fact a disaster and not worth the money at all.

Good location right in the middle of Nanjing Walking Road. The room is clean, the hotel provides good service. Employees speak english.
Breakfast is too expensive.
I like Central Hotel Shanghai. The room is very quiet, good for relaxing. The room was clean and the service was just good. The bed is comfortable, warm and have lots of pillows. I requested a non-smoking room and they really kept the room completely without cigarette smell. Looks like the hotel really listen to what customers request for, or I might be lucky. The location of Central Hotel is really great! It is almost at the middle of Nanjing Walking Street, just a block away and walk less than a few minutes. The price of the room is fair for its location and service. Staffs are very nice and helpful, and they can speak a little bit of English, so communication is not a problem. The price for breakfast is a bit too expensive, you can just walk on Nanjing Road and get a simple egg sandwich at McDonald for breakfast with much cheaper price.
Shopping Tip : Just across the street, Nanjing Road is right there for shopping.

It is very near the shopping area and restaurants. The price is not bad considering their is an exhibit going on there. Their is also a shuttle bus going to the china fair complex and a ticket counter for the train going to HK. Convenient!!
The room is a little bit old but tolerable. their is a cigarette smoke odor but it will be gone if you open the A/C and get used to it.
I will stay here again.

- location
- room (and the view)
- English-speaking staff
- breakfast was expensive
One of the best advantage of this hotel is its central location in downtown Shanghai, close to Nanjing Lu and People's square, and close to the subway.
The rooms were spacious and clean.
It greatly helped that the staff was fluent in English!
We'll definitely come back in this hotel for our next stay.

Very big room with flat screen TV, comfortable bed, great location, touch code safe in room, awesome gym, helpful staff.
Air conditioning did not get room cool enough at times.
Stayed at the Central for 14 nights; great location two blocks from the East Nanjing Rd exit of Line 2 of the Metro; check-in was a breeze; concierge helped me with numerous things; the gym was amazing - great modern equipment. The only negative, as others have mentioned, is that the a/c does not get the room super cold when you need it. But it was bearable. My friends staying across the street at the Sofitel were very envious - they got a fancier lobby - at a much higher price. Will definitely stay at the Central next year when I return to Shanghai.\nNote: the 3 in the ratings below for Food/Dining is because I did not eat there - Agoda needs a 'no opinion' option...
Hotel Feature Tip : You don't have to go out to Nanjing Rd. Use the back entrace and walk down Hankou Rd. to get to People's Square...

EXCELLENT UBICATION, VERY COMFORTABLE ROOM, CLEAN INSTALATIONS, DELICIOUS FOOD AND FRIENDLY STAFF.
EVERYTHING WAS ALL RIGHT.
I RECOMMEND THE HOTEL BECAUSE IT HAS A GREAT UBICATION, NEAR FROM THE BEST SHOPPING AREA IN SHANGHAI. THE HOTEL INSTALLATIONS ARE CLEAN, SAFE AND COMFORTABLES. THE SAUNA CENTER IS THE BEST AND THE HEALTY BODY MASSAGE IS VERY PROFESSIONAL. IT HAS A NICE LOBBY BAR WITH MUSIC. THE STAFF IS VERY FRENDLY AND THE PEOPLE OF THE INFORMATION DESK HELPS WITH EVERYTHING.
Hotel Feature Tip : THE HOTEL HAS AN EXCELLENT AND HEALTY CHINESE BODY MASSAGE.

The hotel is good located.
Internet connection is not free.
The hotel is centrally located, very close to the Nanjing street. It can be easily found by taxi drivers (if you have the address written in Chinese). The rooms are comfortable and clean. The hotel restaurant had both continental and Chinese dishes. The staff is friendly and helpful. During our short stay we did not find any weakness, except internet connection, that was not free.

Very well located near Nanjing Rd, good breakfast and dinner, and an attractive atmosphere.
For business people the central city is difficult to get in and out of if you need to be picked up.
We enjoyed staying here because of the very central location. Only about 10 minutes walk to the Bund. Right behind the Sofitel with its street bar on Nanjing Road from which it is fun to watch the world go by - and always a buzz to stroll along that area. As we were on business (and very busy) we enjoyed the breakfast and did eat a couple of times at the buffet dinner which was quite good. I can recommend this hotel.
Restaurant Tip : The Sofitel street side open bar is fun to watch the world go by. A 2 for 1 Tiger beer special.
