My favorite hotel in Shanghai
Location, comfort & sometimes price
8
I have stayed in about a dozen hotels in Shanghai from the fanciest to the cheapest and this is my favorite. Have come here on business several times and often thought I would like to bring my wife along, so this time we both worked it out to have business in Shanghai at the same time, and she was pleased as I had hoped.
I don't know how many "stars" Fenyang Garden has, but there is no pretentious attitude, at the same time as you get a large comfortable room in a modern building, in a walled garden in a very pleasant neighborhood in the French Concession (across the street from the Conservatory; lots of instrument practice to be heard when you go out for a walk).
Location: Central in French Concession off Huaihai Zhong Lu; easy to get taxis; two short blocks from the subway if you know the shortcut through the alley from Nanchang Lu, otherwise three blocks. Line 10 goes direct to Hongqiao airport & train station. Good restaurants and bars within walking distance in several directions.
Price: Since Fenyang Garden is a modern, spacious hotel in an attractive location, it is usually priced well above what I like to pay for a bed. Fortunately, the pricing is very responsive to demand; rooms are often discounted online so I always check several dates when planning a trip to work the occupancy arbitrage.

Nice garden hotel in the middle of busy Shanghai.
Staff, grounds and neighborhood are all great.
9.3
Top of my list to come back to in Shanghai. I've stayed at a bunch of other places but this one feels like a retreat.

I was very happy to stay for 10 nights. The hotel is new, clean and quiet. The service was pretty good. I would love to go back again.

Beautiful setting, but poor service
Location, garden, historic site
4.7
The Fenyang is set in the spectacular gardens of an old colonial property. Sadly, the service and services are lacking. There is but one small 'restaurant' serving a limited buffet in the morning and a tennis court. There is also a 'cafe/bar' in the old residence, but it is poorly advertised/promoted and thus appears largely deserted. This is sad as it is easily the nicest part of the hotel . Unfortunately for us, it also happened to be unseasonably warm during our stay and the aircons in both rooms did not work. Despite complaining to the front desk, nothing was done and we had to suffer another night as the windows are small and do not open wide.

Good location and price, no wifi.
Location, nice bed, clean.
8.3
Rooms are nice, large and clean. The beds are comfy. The staff is pretty indifferent, but this isn't uncommon in Chinese hotels. Major drawback is no Wifi. There's a LAN line connection, but this isn't helpful if you are only carrying a phone or iPad. That being said, there are a number of restaurants in the area that have Wifi. We've never tried the breakfast.
