Excellent accommodations in the French Concession

We found the Gallery Suites to be an excellent choice when staying in the French concession in Shanghai. We stayed there a total of 9 nights over a month span. It is located about a 5 minute walk from the Hengshan Road Line 1 metro station making it very convenient to get just about anywhere in Shanghai. The staff was wonderful, pleasant and very efficient and on-site working 24 hours a day so that even arriving at 1AM there was someone there to greet us and check us in. The suites are spacious, well appointed and really comfortable. We found this hotel to be an excellent value – and were thrilled to have in-room Wi-fi. Although there is no restaurant at the hotel, there is a restaurant next door (Keven) that is convenient and has excellent choices for Westerners (the French Toast is magnificent). There is an on-site breakfast room and we found the buffet breakfast to be excellent with a variety of choices for Asian, American and European travelers. They even offered eggs and omelets cooked to order. It is on Hengshan Road, so if you are bothered by traffic noise, it is best to ask for a room overlooking the courtyard or Parking area in the back. The rooms, however, are extremely well insulated and we found that even on the street side, it was pretty quiet. The rooms had large closets and lots of drawers. We will definitely stay there again whenever we are in Shanghai.

Spacious art-deco room

Rodents at Gallery Suites!!!

There was a rat infestation at the Suites - I am writing this with some ambivalence as I like the place because of its fabulous location, beautiful rooms and reasonable rates. After a rainy evening I woke up in a panic as I had heard (perceived) what seemed to be a large rodent on the bed - alas I am not joking - I think the weight and noise it made when it ran after I flipped the light switch suggest it was a rat rather than a mouse.
I did not sleep all that well any longer - with lights turned on all night etc.
I notified personnel which was a bit nonchalant about the situation. Over the next 2-3 nights a massive "rat race" noise was coming from the ventilation system in the ceiling of this second floor room. higher floors may not have this problem.
The noise subsided over those three days and no more rats were seen or sensed.
Strange and unpleasant first experience but certainly a lot better than bedbugs
