i stayed in grand mercure zhongya for 6 nights (18.12 - 24.12) with 5 other friends for our grad holiday.
i'll be honest - i paid per night for an executive suite, and at first i thought it was a scam. i was pleasantly surprised to find that this hotel was actually a decent 5-star hotel with excellent service, great location (the subway entrance is 20 metres to the left of the hotel entrance, and the shanghai railway station is about 150m away - great if you want to visit neighbouring towns such as suzhou) and great food.
one recommendation i have for future travellers is to book rooms on the executive levels (either the room or suite) which costs marginally more, but the perks are so worth it. the included breakfast is amazing (lots of range - continental, dumplings, crossaints, cereal, fresh juices/fruits) and access to the executive club lounge (unlimited access to drinks, snack foods, etc) really makes the extra per night worth it. my friends and i liked the hotel so much we were tempted not to leave the hotel for most of the day.
although the hotel itself isn't near the bund or the "centre" of shanghai, accessibility is very easy as long as you are willing to take public transport (the subway - rmb3 one way) or taxi (approx rmb40 to people's park/xintiandi, rmb70 to jin mao tower). definitely staying here again on my next trip to shanghai.
p.s. just make sure you wait for the super specials on agoda before you book the room to make it more worth it!
Hotel Feature Tip:
- Get a room on the executive level (either room or suite); it's worth it!
- Take subway entrance 5 to get to/return to the hotel
- From either airport (Hongqiao or Pudong), there is a shuttle bus that costs approximately RMB26pp that will drop you at the Shanghai Railway Station which is about 50-100m walk from the hotel entrance.

I checked in this hotel and found it's quite convenient and quiet. you can easily access the hotel through line 1 exit 5. it's near shanghai train station and metro line 1, 3, 4. taxi is also easy to reach. the room is clean and new.

The rooms are clean, looking new and modern. Beds are extra comfortable as usual in Accord hotels. All equipments available in the room, bathroom a bit small but does the job. Very nice breakfast. Staff speaks good english

It is always pleasant and great location. The lobby always smells nice.
Nightlife Tip:
If you are looking for good restaurants and shopping for gifts, I would recommend going to Hongmei Lu
It is about 20 minutes by taxi.

Great location but small rooms

I like this hotel because of the location and despite the small rooms, the hotel is clean and tidy, very strategic location. the Shanghai train station is just opposite, across the road. Very convenient for those who wish to travel to other cities of China. Just a 5 minutes by taxi to most tourist attractions and shopping areas. The hotel staffs are so so. There is no internet in the room but you can always utilise the wifi at the lobby area 24 hours. Alot of eating cafes along the streets surrounding the hotel. But one thing i wish to highlight is i don like the shower area. The wall and floor is made of wood. Stains accumulated after a while and i feel it a bit dirty with stains. There should be heater in the bathroom during winter season.

located near to shopping centers, restaurants and convenient stores. when you walk out from the hotel, you will find all these shops surrounding the hotel. within walking distance from the railway, bus and metro stations which is very convenient when you go for sightseeings. but, sorry to say that some of the hotel staff were quite rough when handling your lugagges.
