A beautiful hotel at a great price. Exit 5 of shanghai railway station makes it extremely easy to navigate city from the hotel. Unusual to have panoramic views of city from bathroom which has huge windows, even in the shower cubicle! Try the shanghai style hotpot in the hotel Chinese restaurant. It's very good and huge!

this is our first time travel to shanghai. we stayed for 4 nights at grand mercure zhongya downtown hotel. it was only about 15 minutes to the central areas, 1 min walk from the hotel to the subway station. the room is large with very comfort bed and very good shower.
overall, very reasonable price for the stay in shanghai and i would stay here again.

Booked 2 executive suites. Stayed on the 23rd and 20th level. Automatically went to 27th level check in by the staff. Great breakfast on the fifth level. Guests are entitled to have breakfast either on the fifth or 27th levels. complimentary meals from 530 to 730pm for executive guests. King size bed with nice French decor. 42 inch tv with couches and writing table. Huge bathroom with own cubicle for shower and wc; with bath tub. Phillips sound system with iPhone or iPod dock ,radio and alarm clock.since it's a western chain, bed has the right softness as compared to other hotels stayed in china. Less storage place to hang clothes.
For the 20th level, same layout as above but with a small kitchenette. No Phillips docking station.
Location is great. Being near shanghai railway station to nearby cities. Subway is only below the hotel with a one min walk to subway exit 5. 2 to 3 stops to the bund and people's square for shopping. Easy traveling around the city with abundant of cabs near hotel. Many restaurants situate around the exterior of hotel.

very stylish new hotel. location is a bit remote but you have access to a metro station within 1 min walking distance (essentially next door).
rooms are clean and new but a bit small. however, this hotel is a steal if you can get a good rate.

Booked an Executive Suite, unfortunately we were given an Executive room, but still good value. All staff were Excellent. Food was good. Not a lot to do in the surrounding area during the evening. Hotel was clean and well presented.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
If you use the excellent value for money taxis, ask the hotel staff to write your destination in Chinese Characters and take an hotel card with you as most taxis drivers do not speak or read English characters. Ask the hotel staff to buy your train tickets as the know what to do, try to buy your return ticket at the same time in case the train you want to return on is full. The fast trains are reasonably priced and better than anything in the UK. The hotel make a small charge for buying your train tickets

Great location, we stayed for 3 nights, it was only about 15 minutes to the central areas, 1 min walk from the hotel to the metro station. The metro station was also easy to access. The service was decent, the only problem we found was the room temperature, it was still quite warm in the room despite the fact that we turned it to the coolest. Overall, great price for the stay and I would stay here again.
Hotel Feature Tip:
Book the executive rooms, it give you free wifi access (otherwise you will have to pay for wifi) , and you also get access to the executive lounge for breakfast and happy hour.

Back a second time and still loving it

this is my second time staying here and the experience has been just as wonderful.
the bedroom and bathroom are large and elegantly designed in hues of oak and cream. if you are picky about hot water at high pressure for the shower, this will not disappoint.
service is quick and efficient. the techician appears in sheer minutes after i make a call about a faulty thermostat. and the problem is nicked in no time!
the bell-hops are also extremely helpful in calling in taxis into the hotel for you from the main street. definitely no need to stand shivering along the street yourself!
location wise, there are plenty of small outlets selling food near the hotel. not much in terms of shopping though. then again, the subway is literally steps away. you will find no problems getting to the shopping nirvanas of nanjing road and huaihai road.

i stayed in the suite room, the room is very big and clean. and also the b'fast quite good and enough choices, but the staff work in executive is nice and helpful, if next time i back in shanghai, i will choose this hotel again and stay in executive floor. but one thing is i think also need to provide a free wifi in room as well on executive room no only free cable only, since i only can using the free wifi in executive lounge only.
