Solo travelers United States of America, August 19, 2012	Second stay here: just as good as the first Quiet, nicely-located, well-run 7.7 this was my second stay at the hotel carolina. both times, i wanted a reasonably-priced place not too far from yuyintang, a terrific live music venue next to the west yan'an road subway station. i was as happy with this stay as i wasa with the first: the staff was efficient and professional -- not obsequious or effusively friendly or anything, which is fine with me -- and the room was clean and well-appointed. the rooms here are smallish and comfortable -- one might say 'cozy' -- and the atmosphere is that of a business hotel. not many frills, not many tourists, not much noise. if you need to be in the neighborhood, it's worth a try. Nightlife Tip: Yuyintang.

Couples United States of America, June 16, 2012	Quiet but great location Quiet, location, cleanliness 8.7 basically a business hotel, with small, very clean and well-maintained rooms and a responsive (but mostly only chinese-speaking) staff. very comfortable. just the right kind of place for doing some sightseeing in the french concession area of shanghai, which you can travel to by bus, metro, or walking all very easily. travelers used to luxury hotels may find this place a little threadbare in spots, particularly common areas outside the rooms; but the rooms themselves are in great shape, and it's an excellent value. Nightlife Tip: Yuyintang, the live music venue, is very close to the hotel -- a ten-minute walk. If you like a sort of college music scene -- loud, a little crowded, with cold beer -- check the schedule here and see something.
