Nice business hotel with a cental location
I liked the location because of it proximity to Xintiandi. The rooms very good. Spacious and clean. The shower was good and bathrooms very clean.

For the price, this is a great hotel for a business traveler or a family with small children. The amenities are all good. Everything worked. The rooms were spacious and clean. The free wifi was of good speed.
I was expecting less. This hotel is run on international standards. I was very happy.

Prime location near HuiHai Road in French Concession, clean rooms, well maintained, friendly staff

this is the best hotel option in the french concession area. walkable to many cafes and restaurants. taxis are plentiful. it is located near line 1 and across the street from new shanghai icc center. the rooms are clean, good furniture, better than other 4 star hotels in shanghai. this hotel is good value for money.

Review of my 6 nights stay
Near train station, near Parkson shopping centre, Good service and approachable crew.

stayed with my wife at howard johnson for 6 nights.
food: had a sandwich for breakfast during my stay and the sandwich set was good. to us, the buffet prices were on the high side. there were 2-3 bakeries along the way from hotel to train station. no food court around the area but restaurants.
location: near 7-11 provision store, banks and can do shopping along huaihai road.
entertainment: there were a few pubs nearby but as due to the hotel centralized location, it's easy to go main night life district such as xintiandi.
hotel service: very approachable service crew where you can count on them for directions or getting a cab for you. but you need to throw the towels to the correct basket in the room or else the towels will be reused. you also need to specify if you want to change bedsheets as they will also reuse them.

Nice hotel for business

we picked up this hotel in order to be close to the former french concession in shanghai. the hotel is more adapted for business than for tourists. however, the room was comfortable and spacious, with typical expected amenities.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
The hotel is close to shops along Huaihai Road and within walking distance to line 1 metro station South Shanxi Road. You can catch the Big Red Bus for tourists any place along Huaihai Road for a tour of the city. Across the street is Xiangyang park where locals practice Tai Chi.

Just off the best shopping street in Shanghai has got to be a strong message to send to most Tourists visiting the city and as such, the Howard Johnson Hotel is likely to continue to attract many of those tourists looking for good value in the heart of a truly expensive city!
I was looking for a bit more than that and had recently stayed in a truly magnificent Howard Johnson managed Hotel in a small City called Yixing. There is no comparison between the humble Shanghai establishment and its lavish Yixing sister hotel.
I suppose that I purchased the Hotel from Agoda largely by brand and I was disappointed. The hotel is old and small, my room had a poor view and chipped and damaged fittings.
I will take greater care when booking Howard Johnson in the future.

a great place to stay and explore shanghai, set in the heart of french concession, many nice restaurants and bars close by. one block away from subway stop on line 1 and 10.
room is good size and bed is very comfortable compare with other local run hotel, good breakfast buffet but a little pricy there is a starbucks close by as alternative option.
i spent 5 nights at this hotel, feel very much like home.
