We really enjoyed our stay at Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, it's so perfect. The room is spacious, nice and clean with great view, breakfast is great too. It is in the middle of Nanjing Road where you can shop all day long, because you can always go back to your hotel for a rest or drop all your shopping bags to start shopping again...*smile*. We really like to thank David the front desk officer for being so friendly and helpful.

The concierge staff speak excellent English and are very helpful with sightseeing, train connections, etc. The hotel has an excellent location, about a 20 minute walk to the Bund. The area near the hotel is fun, with lots of restaurants, shops and night life. The view of the neon city is nice. The price is fair.

We stayed in Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel for 4 nights in October where our stay was very satisfactory. We chose Howard Johnson as it was one of the more reasonably priced of the recognized International Hotel chains. The rooms weren’t overly large, though we did arrange to have an additional bed put in the room, but were very clean and in good condition. Location is very good with the hotel no more than 100 meters away from the bustling Nanjing Rd and walking distance (approx 10 mins) from The Bund and People’s Square. Fairly good service with English speaking staff. Recommended.

Hotel is located right opposite Nanjing Road.
Finding nearby shopping & food is not an issue.
Right behind the hotel there's a KFC (24-7), McDonald, 7-11 and other local restaurant for lunch, dinner & midnight snacks.
There's also a Train Ticket office right opposite the road should you plan to take the train to nearby province like Hangzhou. You can ask the friendly staff exactly where is it.
Room size is pretty good & clean with LCD TV (80+ channels) & free internet. Right outside the lobby, the staff can help flag down a Taxi for you and provide directions.

the stay was exceptional,the concerage couldn't have been better with the help of maps and places to avoid, the bellman had our luggage to the room now, with a small tour of the suite and helpful tips.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
the tea rooms can be a little pricy

Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel really lived up to all the reviews we had read. All services were of a high standard. Non-smoking floors were greatly appreciated. The hotel's proximity to the Walking Street and the Bund make it a top choice for visitors to Shanghai. Highly recommended.
Travel tip:
Location in Shanghai is everything. This hotel is a top choice.

We enjoyed our stay. The location puts it in walking to distance to the places we wanted to visit. Internet connection, although free, was very slow. The Concierge was very helpful with our transport/ taxi arrangements. Although some taxi drivers still tried to take us on circuitous routes to our destinations.
As in previous comments, the beds were firm but still acceptable to our tastes.
Travel tip:
If you get the chance, learn to speak Mandarin. As in most countries -- to get a good deal, speak the local language.
