Grocery store, restaurant and vegetable market across the street; also the remnants of Shanghai's WWII Jewish "ghetto" are located in the immediate area if you're a history buff; and not far from subway; staff are easy to talk to and try hard to understand and attend to guests' needs;
. staff "forgot" to turn on telephone service leaving to much initial frustration
. bahtroom toilet constantly backed up
. staff speaks minimal English
Nice old-fashioned hotel which has seen better days. Great location though if you like Hongkou. If you don't speak Chinese, be prepared for a few moments of frustration. Plumbing and facility are in need of modernization, but that's part of the place's charm. If you're looking for a sanitized sterile "business class" hotel, don't go here but do try it if you want a chance to practice your Chinese with a normal - as opposed to stiff, overly solicitous, group of locals.
