great hotel for sight seeing... close to the subway and the bund.
our package included breakfast which made it a very good value. the staff in the hotel were friendly and helpful and spoke english very well. the only negative thing was the shower was an odd layout and quite short/ small.
nice bar in the lobby for a drink at the end of a busy day.

hotel employee can speak english. maybe japanese speaker is not there or few.
facility is not new, but crean. room is sapacious. view from the room of 18th floor is good. a refregerator did not work well. a bathroom door did not close tightly. breakfast at 31th floor restaurant is so-so, but view from there is beautiful.
he can go to nanjin-donru, bund and yuiyuen whithin 15 minutes walk. near the hotel there are some local restaurants, conveniense stores and massage shops.
local restaurants and massage shops are very cheep.
totaly i was satisfied with this hotel.

the hotel service is average but the location is really good. it take 10 ~ 15mins to all major spots. room is a bit old but still maintain pretty good condition.

salvo is only 5 minute walk south from nan jing east road station and 10 minute walk north of yu yuan station. 10 minute walk to bund. we paid cdn with breakfast included, so for that price great value. as budget travellers we were completely satisfied. some features of room asian style, eg. bedding - no top sheet, just bottom sheet and duvet cover. but crisp and clean. bed and pillows quite firm, but awesome for bad backs (enough give to be comfortable). oversized bathtub nice for soaking after walking all day long. buffet breakfast served in restaurant on 31st floor, both western and chinese food with lots to chose from. eggs made to order.
Travel tip:
don't miss yu yuan gardens and walk around the "old" street. tian zi fang narrow alleys also cute for walking around. these two "old" neighbourhoods have completely different styles so go to both.
taxi from hotel to maglev train was 80 rmb (sunday morning no traffic). show boarding stub or itinerary to pay 40 instead of 50 rmb if travelling same day. subway is super cheap, easy to get around, but it gets very crowded so not suitable if carrying heavy baggage. if travelling light regular subway does go all the way to airport now.

Stayed 3 nights in this hotel, room is comfortable, location is good, surrounded by shops and walking distance to Nanjing road (shopping mall) and if you wish you can continue from here to the bund.
Not recommended for family with young children.
5 star hotel but staff hardly speak any English, a shame! Huge lobby but few sofas to sit. Wifi in the lobby is slow.

the salvo hotel is generally a terrific value. we were greeted cheerfully and professionally upon check-in, were very impressed with the suite our "room" turned out to be, and the proximity to the highlights to just about everything in one wants to do in shanghai was a major plus. our one disappointment was a rather smelly septic system, something which we hadn't experienced in any of the previous hotels, or even the riverboat, where we had stayed during the earlier parts of our travels in china
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Take the Metro. It's cheap, bilingual, clean, and air conditioned. Even the toilets are relatively clean.
