ok but buyer beware and over priced

First impressions matter. A lot. This hotel gives the impression of being a funky design enclave in shanghai but don't be fooled. Despite the good location (opposite the beach on the bund) and spring a great roof top bar there are a lot better and funnier places to stay in shanghai.
So first impressions. Arrive. Two rooms booked. One room actually reserved. No great shakes and to be expected from time to time. Well recovered but no apology or apparent concern at the mistake. The room. Clean. Clinical. Polished concrete and wood. Nice. But dirty. All the white goods surfaces marked with cup stains and the cigarette Burns to the wooden balustrade show the room needs a refurbished. Designer furniture collection as advertised - perhaps but suspect a lot of it was made on guangdong rather than Milan. Again no great shakes but if you advertise it, live it. Dinner reservations. Right restaurant. Wrong location. Wrong time and wrong number of diners.
Real issue with this hotel. Some places give service where nothing is too much trouble. Here everything was too much trouble. We wanted the address for yangs dumplings (go go go as it it amazing). The look on the receptionist girls face would suggest I had asked her to eat her children. After all I had disturbed her from playing on her iphone. In the end she wrote down the address for the wrong place.
Value for money. Not really. There are much cooler and funnier places to stay in Shangai and at a much cheaper rate. Besides if I want to stay in a place clinically surrounded by designer brands I will fall asleep in Harrods

Diamond in the Rough

I've been working in Asia for a few months and enjoy trying new places to stay, on many ends of the spectrum. The space was great...rustic on the outside, modern and clean where it mattered. Nice touches like Kafke quotes painted on the walls discretely. Their lobby bar area was a great place to eat a light dinner and work on a laptop in a really comfortable lounge experience. Web connection was a bit slow at times, which detracted, but not the end of the world. Staff was really pleasant and even if there was a language barrier, it was a sweet exchange.

i have been to the waterhouse before and it does not fail to impress. i like the urban sense of design and the rooms are extremely comfortable. when there was a problem with my expresso machine, someone came and helped within 2 minutes.
some people complain that it is too modern- to the point that it is not really practical or functional- but i have never had any problems. i find it just right.
breakfast is delicious and you can choose from a wide menu.

Located one street away from Huangpu river, and right next to an entertainment area full of restaurants and bars.
Stayed in river view suite, the pity is all windows are locked and cannot be opened to get fresh area.
Love the roof top bar/restaurant.
Not a full service hotel, no gym/pool, breakfast menu is quite limited, relatively low value of money.

waterhouse was a great experience. not only was the hotel beautifully design with interesting corners all around the vicinity for you to explore and enjoy, the staff are extremely helpful and hospitable. despite some hiccups with my booking, they upgraded me to a better room because they didn't want me to wait. as the hotel is located in a outskirt location, the staff are always ready to help call a cab and assist you when you make your way out.
the rooms are spacious, well designed and a visual treat. it feels like home. if you have that bit of extra cash to spare, i would definitely recommend this hotel for those who are looking to pamper and relax.

A very well designed hotel that obviously puts in the extra effort in aesthetic, and still maintaining a premium level of comfort.
Location is strategic, walking distance from the Bund and right next to the Water Dock which is quite a bustling area.
