Shenzhen
The richest city in China is also its third-largest. It bears the title of one of China’s ‘Special Economic Zones’, which means that former leader Deng Xiopeng established it as one of the country’s first attempts at modern capitalism. Travelers who have never been there have a habit of writing Shenzhen off as too new and commercial, but the fact remains that this is one of China’s most enthralling success stories of recent times. Commercial appeal dominates, and travelers owe it to themselves to see what the commotion is all about.
Luohu Commercial City is a major site in Shenzhen. It’s a five-story complex with an expansive selection of shops and entertainment venues. While travelers usually head to Hong Kong for shopping, people from Hong Kong come here for the savings and selection. Some of the best Shenzhen accommodation is found here, especially near Luohu-Dongmen.
Next to the shopping mall is Luohu-Luohu Railway Station, a major transport hub that connects to major cities across eastern China. Hotels in this area cater for through-travelers who don’t want to stray far from the transportation grid.
Shenzhen doesn’t have the historic sites of other major Chinese cities, but visitors can choose form a long list of cosmopolitan activities. After seeing the sites in Hong Kong, a side trip to Shenzhen reveals an eclectic mix of Chinese and international restaurants, and dinner can be followed with a trip to the cinema or Cantonese opera house.
Hotels near Shenzhen cater especially for business travelers due to the city’s unprecedented financial success. Domestic tourism is big because there are several theme parks and beach resorts like Dameisha in the area. Shenzhen Airport offers domestic and international flights. It’s served by several excellent business-oriented hotels.
