good location, great facilities in the sofitel next door, that are free to use: fitness room and indoor pool. the muslim quarter is not at walking distance, but is only a 10 rmb taxi drive away.

We stayed in five hotels while in China, and this hotel was our least favorite. It was higher priced than some of the others and had a bland, even dated, decor and rather small rooms. We did use it as a base to walk around Xi'an, so the location was good. The bathroom was western, but a section of the wall between the bedroom and the shower was a curtained window. That was weird. The staff were professional.

i'd highly recommend this hotel. the rooms are very comfortable, good sized and our room had recently been renovated so felt very modern, was very clean and well decorated. it's great value for money as you can use all of facilities including the gym, spa and swimming pool in the sofitel which is literally next door for free. it's about a 20 minute walk to the train station where you can catch the local bus to the terracotta warriers (40 mins direct and only 7 yuan) and about a 15-20 min walk to the centre of town. the buffet at the sofitel was also great.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Catch the local bus to the Terracotta Warriers. It only costs 7 yuan each, takes, 40 minutes and drops you directly outside the entrance. It's very easy and very quick.

although not locate at mid town but walking distance to subway station bei da jie and sight-seeing attractions.

In addition to the Mercure on Renmin Square, I also stayed in the Grand Noble Hotel and the Jianguo Hotel in Xi'an. The Mercure was a close second to the Grand Noble. It is in a good location within the ancient city walls, but you will need to walk for 15-20 minutes to get to the Bell and Drum Towers and Muslim Street. The room was smaller than the one I stayed in at the Grand Noble. The Mercure room also had a mildly disagreeable odor. The bathroom was very nicely decorated and clean. The bed was very firm, so it will not be to everyone's taste. I did not try the food. There is a piano bar in the adjacent Sofitel hotel that was extremely overpriced.

There are three hotels within this Renmin Square complex: Mercure, Grande Mercure and Sofitel (in order of ascending prices). We stayed in the Mercure and have access to all the amenities anyway. The room was not as grand as the other two properties, but as a sightseer, we were not spending time in our rooms.
We would not recommend any of the buffets (breakfast or lunch). They are a poor value (so-so quality at a high price) and just too many people during lunch. For the same price, pick any of the other restaurants for lunch. The coffee shop has a decent food/sandwich selection. One of the few places in Xi'An for good coffee (avoid the Starbucks nearby).
The gym is nicely equipped with a nice lap pool.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
The cabs can take you places, but as with most taxis in China they have an optimum range that they would travel-they won't take you if it is too short or too far. Be prepared to walk, take the subway, or take the unlicensed covered-jitney--basically a motor cycle with an attached cab (ask about the price first-varies greatly from one driver to another and get ready for a bumpy video-game like ride through traffic).

mercure on renmin square seems like the little brother of the other hotels on the same square (sofitel and grand mercure). sometimes it felt like a 'school' hotel, with staff being trained to maybe move up. but what could be seen at a down side i found like a positive side, because the staff was always eager to help.
they arranged a taxi to take us to see the terracota warriors, which worked perfectly and also a taxi to the airport.
that said, the room is very comfortable, the only remark would be the hard mattres, which seems to be very commom across china. our room was facing the avenue outside, and even with the double windows the traffic noise bothered a little.
very positive is that staying here is possible to use all amenities of the other hotels (gym, pool), which are great.
location is pretty central, within the city walls.
i didnt really like xi'an at all... very polluted and a bit chaotic.

lovely hotel, with helpful staff. in a group of three hotels. this was the cheapest but able to use all the facilites of sofitel. as we were there only for sightseeing we didn't use swimming pool etc. a £2 taxi fare got us to the muslim quarter so pretty central.
Restaurant Tip:
If you opt for the buffet at the Sofitel - give youself plenty of time or it will close before youv'e finished your 1st glass of wine

excellent hotel & location

the mercure is one of a group of accor hotels in renmin square - you've also sofitel and the grand mercure. this means you have access to all the facilities of all the hotels in the group within walking distance - the best restaurants are in the sofitel as well as the fitness centre & spa. rooms in the mercure are excellent value and so is the buffet breakfast. excellent range of dining options in the square. location is a 20 minute walk south of the station and close to the main shopping streets. xian now has a north-south metro whivh will get you to the shansi museum and big wild goose pagoda in 4 stops from the central metro station which is another 15 minute walk from the hotel. the muslim part of rhe city is 20 minutes away. you can arrange tours in the hotel but the tourist centre by the aforementioned central metro stop is better value.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Big Wild Goose Pagoda - excellent site for history & ancient architecture buffs - the surrounding area has been very well developed by the city as a mega tourist venue, very nice gardens for strolling sitting etc. and plenty of tourist buys in the area.
