Yau Ma Tei district is north of Tsim Sha Tsui along Nathan Road, one of the most important commercial avenues in Hong Kong. This entire area is very distinct from the expatriate and colonial neighborhoods that characterize much of Hong Kong. This is especially true in the residential neighborhoods of Mongkok.

Accommodation near Mongkok / Yau Ma Tei is in the heart of Kowloon, and it offers a more Chinese atmosphere than the hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui or Central. The area still has plenty of tourist infrastructure despite its residential atmosphere.

The Georgian Government House is one of the best colonial sites in the area. It was built in the 1850s and then renovated in 1942 under Japanese occupation. Its Japanese style is rare in Hong Kong.

The main commercial district is to the north. Langham Place is a recently opened commercial complex with a hotel, shopping mall and office tower. Farther north is Grand Century Palace, home to 200 shops and a selection of restaurants. The Mongkok KCR station makes it especially accessible, so it's usually buzzing with travelers and local shoppers on weekends and holidays.

Hotels in Mongkok and Yau Ma Tei are relatively modern, and most of them are located south of Kwong Wah Hospital. Visitors looking for the ‘real' Hong Kong will enjoy the traditional Flower Market or Tung Choi street market. Other popular markets in Yau Ma Tei deal in specialty items ranging from fresh produce to jade.
