Wanchai

East of Central, Wanchai has changed dramatically in the last 50 years. It fronts Victoria Harbor and has impressive modern shopping centers to match its traditional markets. While many of Hong Kong’s markets have been covered or moved indoors, Wanchai’s open-air ‘wet markets’ are reminiscent of old Hong Kong.

Wanchai hotels near the HK Convention and Exhibition Centre enjoy great harbor views. This impressive bit of architectural hosts conferences, concerts and trade fairs throughout the year. It’s next to Golden Bauhinia Square, which is known for its intricate bauhinia flower monuments. This area is especially popular with Chinese tourists.

Visitors spend most of their time south of the harbor. Temple Street Night Market is the best wet market in Wanchai. It’s a lively place with lots of local atmosphere. This is one of the best places in Hong Kong for tourists do a bit of haggling, as few local markets are so distinctly Chinese.

A few decades ago, Wanchai was synonymous with rowdy, late-night entertainment that drew in sailors on leave. All of the notoriety is gone, but Wanchai still knows how to throw a party. It boasts some of the best bars and clubs in Hong Kong within easy reach of accommodation in Wanchai.

Local transportation links are excellent. Visitors riding in on the Star Ferry have an outstanding view of the Wanchai skyline, so even though it's faster to ride the MTR in on the Island Line, the journey is not as picturesque. A tram line also passes through Wanchai making it especially easy to access.
