Rain Tree hotel is in a smart, leafy neighbourhood. Our room was well appointed, with a very comfy bed and well-equipped, small-ish bathroom. The bath products were beautiful, and I made sure to take the body moisturiser with me, as it is such good quality. We loved the appearance of the roof-top pool and restaurant, but as it was extremely hot during our visit, we did not take advantage of either. The ground floor restaurant, where breakfast is also served, has a good, reasonably-priced selection, and seemed popular with local business-types. However, the best feature of this hotel must certainly be the staff. Extremely attentive and efficient. They went out of their way to ensure our stay was as good as they could make it. They organised for a car and driver to take us down to Pondicherry for 3 days and return to Chennai (and another night in the Rain Tree). They telephoned us at our Pondicherry hotel to enquire whether the car and driver met our expectations and that all was well--that is what we call service! Upon our return, all the staff greeted us like long lost friends.

Be aware that Indians love their food very, very spicy. We eat Indian food regularly, and have travelled quite extensively in India over a number of years. However, too many dishes were so firey-hot as to be almost inedible. The decor is cool, almost-minimalist but verging a little on universal-bland.Aside from these very minor quibbles, we would be hard pressed to think of anything we did not like about this hotel.

This small-scale hotel enjoys a lovely, leafy, quiet location. The staff are however its best attribute, and whoever is in charge of staff training is to be commended, especially as this is one area that so many Indian hotels (even the best-known 5 star brands leave much to be desired in this area) fall far short of expected international standard practices. Nevertheless, the Rain Tree staff are not bland or impersonal, but still retain their individuality. Directly behind the hotel, in the street at the rear, is a shop that stocks one our all-time favourite Indian brands, Anokhi. When we enquired whether they knew of Anokhi, the staff told us exactly how to find it, and on our return even wanted to know if our expedition was a success! Love the Rain Tree, and would recommend it without hesitation to travelling friends and family.

Shopping Tip : Ask hotel staff how to get to Anokhi, one of India's best retailers, specialising in very stylish beautifully made womens', mens' and childrenswear, as well as gorgeous homewares such as cotton bedspreads, table linen, cotton bags. They specialise in hand-blocked fine cottons. Anokhi is stocked by a shop called Chamiers, in Chamiers Road, located at the hotel's rear.
