The hotel is well located and is in a delightful garden setting. The heritage features are high quality, mostly original from its former life. The rooms are enormous, with many having a large, wide verandah. There is a large internal courtyard for relaxing and dining. The pleasant pool is in a delightful garden setting. A good buffet breakfast and lunch is served with a limited but quite adequate a la carte choice available for dinner. Restaurant staff pleasant and helpful.
Front desk staff rather brusque and inflexible when confronted with queries and situations that do not conform to their very narrow training. There are no pool towels that we could see, which means that the one bathroom towel per person must serve double use. The restaurant staff also need more intensive training--well-meaning, but lacking in some basic skills. The hotel has an eclectic, rather "eccentric" choice of music for the public areas, ranging from Bach fuges, entire ballet scores, violin concerti, interspersed with highlights from Gilbert & Sullivan. Although we are very much classical music fans, the fact that these are broadcast at a volume too loud for comfort, starting early in the morning until quite late at night, is somewhat of an irritant. They need to re-discover the volume control dial and re-think the hours!
The Metropole is an ideal choice for a stay in Mysore. It is well-located, although it is still necessary to take a tuk-tuk (auto-rickshaw) to the palace and further afield--this in itself is great fun, and much nicer than taxis (hard to find, in any case). When asked about shopping, the front desk staff directed us to the city's main street, which is quite close by. This, in our view, is not an area that a typical tourist would have much interest in, as it only seemed to have a number of international chains such as Esprit/Nike/Adidas etc. filled with out-of-date merchandise. Most likely, this is indicative of the fact that the hotel staff are not well-trained in the sorts of things tourists are likely to want to see--probably assuming that the foreigner would only be interested in Western merchandise. Better by far to explore the bazaar and stalls in and around the rear and front extrances of the Palace, where various crafts and local produce abounds. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the Metropole. It is immaculately clean, and its delightful grounds ensure a quiet, tranquil stay. It would be our first choice should we return to Mysore, and would certainly recommend it to friends and family.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The Palace of Mysore does not allow photography (all visitors must pass through an Xray machine). The best thing is to explore the exterior, then join the queue for the interior, after having deposited shoes and cameras in the allocated place. Forget the city's main street, if you're inerested in Indian cultural products. Instead, head for the streets at the rear of the palace, and secondly, the little stalls gathered around the entrance.

The restaurant is first-rate and the wait-staff are friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable, the bathroom met our standards, and the air conditioning worked well. The hotel is a renovated historic building and is atmospheric and attractive.
The front desk staff were slow about changing money and weren't particularly informed or helpful about what to do or where to go in Mysore. The gardens weren't well-kept and the pool was too dirty to swim in.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Our side trip to the organic team/spice/coffee plantation Golden Mist (not far from Madikeri) offered a peaceful, quiet setting and an inspirational glimpse at the possibility of sustainable agriculture in India.
