Every time an Agoda customer checks out of a hotel we send them an email asking them to write a review of their stay. This is the only way reviews can be submitted. Every review must then be approved by our content team before being posted on the Agoda website. Therefore, unlike many other travel sites, ALL Agoda reviews are certified and genuine.

Great location and stunning view from my room!
8.3
a bit hard to find down narrow alleyways but there are a lot of locals to assist (for a small fee). also known now as "palace on the steps". central to everything along the river.
Hotel Feature Tip:
Ask for one of the suite rooms with a view of the Ganga (Ganges)

Great location
Wonderful view and good location along the ghats
7.3
Varanasi is an amazing place and has a lot of budget accommodation of which this is one. The rooms are very very basic but adequate.Water was hot and the room clean on arrival, however not that well maintained. Roof top restaurant served very good freshly prepared food.

Budget guest house in good location
5.7
All the ghat accommodation in the budget range are of similar quality and this is no different. Basic accommodation but in a very good location, just a few minutes walk from the main burning ghat. However the rooms are tired and dirty. The staff lacking in the usual charm you find with most people in India. The restaurant though it actually good with good and very fresh food, be prepared for a little wait though as it is all freshly prepared. Just a shame they couldn't manage to do service with a smile.

rude staff, mould/mildew growing thick on the walls, loud monkeys outside at night keeping you awake, no hot water and at one stage no running water at all....
varanasi is beautiful though and very much worth visiting. don't go to india without walking/boating the ghats of the ganga. just stay somewhere else!!!

We had booked well in advance a room with a river view. The room was basic, which we expected for the price, but could have been cleaner. The worst thing is the management seems to make a habit of not honouring bookings, from what we were told while there and from reading other reviews. On top of this we were overcharged in the restaurant and overcharged for a taxi to the station. We would not recommend this hotel.

Great location but with spectacular view

Ajay guesthouse is quite good value as views are amazing and locationis good, however the room we had was tired, wallpaper literally hanging off the wall, I know its a budget hotel but I think the hotel owner should show their customer some respect by addressing the general maintenance issues...afterall it doesnt cost that much to remove damaged wallpaper and repaint the room, or replace the discoloured towels or pillows... small detail like this would make a huge difference...

Good views, but some problems
View from room and restaurant

This hotel is actually 3 different hotels run by the same family (Ajay, Hotel Elena, and Palace on the Steps): when you get there, they shuffle you into whichever one has an opening. My booking clearly said "Ganges view," but they tried to put me in a room without one; I argued until I got moved. Rooms are not very clean and I had no hot water; when I asked for a bucket, I got one of barely lukewarm water. Discussions in breakfast room suggested hot water was very hit or miss, no matter what you paid for your room (some people were paying 3 times as much as me, with somewhat better views, or even less than me if they had not booked online and were good at haggling). I felt the online price I paid was too much for what was offered. It's handy having a rooftop restaurant with nice views, and it was easy to meet other travelers. The hotel had a couple of friendly guides you could book to take you around to places. Finally, you can't get to it by rickshaw, and you have to walk -- it's a bit hard to find if you're not familiar with Varanasi. But don't give in and engage one of those awful touts who try to stop your rickshaw on the way -- just ask on the street.

Great Location but disappointing features
Great Views - if you get the right room
5.7
We booked a Maharaja Room, which is supposed to come with a view. We even called the guest house ahead of our arrival (after the Agoda booking) to reserve a room in that class and they confirmed accordingly. But when we arrived they showed us a dingy room at the back with no river view at all. When we objected they said all rooms are Maharaja rooms because they call this the Maharaja Tower. Only after a lengthy argument we were finally given a room with a view and a small balcony.
But we could not stand on the balcony because it was impossible to close the door from outside and there was a high possibility the monkeys would slip through the open or ajar door and ransack the room.
The room itself and the bathroom were fairly clean (the bathroom with nice, modern tiles but also could not close the door) but "furnished" totally impractical. There was no rack or table to but a travel bag, no chair or hook to put some cloths and no shelf in the bathroom to place the toiletry bag, etc. Hot water supply in our room was good because there was an electric hot water tank but I heard another guest complain that she had no hot water for 2 days (in another room).
Location right at he ghats is great but the wall of the palace at the level of the ghats are used as urinals and this is a bit of a turn-off.
Yes, the guest house is located in an old palace but properly maintained and smartly furnished and honestly administrated it could be a great place to stay. Unfortunately this is not the case for the price they charge. You can be lucky and get a good room or be stuck with what is left.
