they give you free water! When i called the front desk, because our room was cold, someone came up-and i told him was there something they could do about the dogs barking incessantly. he looked at me-shrugging-what barking?!!! this place is a little skuzzy-altho so is varanasi the food was fine- just overpriced. the hotel is old, without charm + not a place i can recommend.-but we were there in the rain and cold, so didn't get the beauty of this town.
Shopping Tip : around the corner from the hotel is a silk making coop. they were very nice + had lovely silk scarves.

location is ok. 10-15 minutes to river. lobby was clean but the room was dark and dusty. breakfast was so-so. it was just ok. location was ok, it was not so far from river. amenity was good.

Proximty to the tourist destinations in Varanasi, Lovely quiet bar to relax in, excellent restaurant, nice swimming pool. Its one small lift gets crowed when busy, slow check in and check procedures, shops not stocking standard tourist items such as appropriate batteries for digital cameras. Clarks was the first tourist hotel in Varanasi and is showing its age. Rooms and decor are a bit tired. However, we found int comfortable and the service reasonable.
We enjoyed a swim in the pool at the back of the hotel, and enjoyed numerous meals in the restaurant. I like Indian food and found that the presentation and quantities served in restaurant to be good. I loved the vegeterian food there.
If I return to Varanasi I would be happy to stay there again.
Shopping Tip : There is small shopping mall about 100-200 metres from the hotel just around a bend in the road. There is a McDonalds and a Pizza place in the shopping mall. How ever, remember that in India beef is not served so you will have to subsitute a Big Mac for Maharaja Chicken Burger or a Vegie Burger.
