This is an old style Balinese hotel dating back to the 1920's whith plenty of charm and ambiance. The grounds are delighful with lotus ponds/carvings/statutes.

Some of the rooms are somewhat dark and dingy (Arry Smith 2 and 3). The bathrooms are long overdue a revamp. The hotel would not suit anyone with walking difficulties.

I think this is a hotel you will either love or loathe. I love it and this is the third time I have stayed. My sister in law on the other hand did not enjoy it - the insects put her off. If you are looking for a place which is clean and clinical don't come here however if you want something with real Balinese character this hotel comes highly recommended.

Shopping Tip : Apparently if you are given a black bag by the shop keepers you are a hard negotiator. A white bag you are a soft touch.

The much-imitated original royal Balinese style, full of greenery, deep shady thatched roofs and a mass of stone carving, is only looking slightly tired today. The pool is a quiet refuge surrounded by birdsong and greenery, and the rooms are spacious with a good view.

Many steep steps make it inappropriate for the elderly, disabled or people who are sore from climbing Gunung Agong. The included breakfast is very basic.

Hotel Tjampuhan has been a mainstay of the Ubud hospitality scene since the royal family of Ubud offered the site to German artist Walter Spies. Its charming location on a steep river valley, looking across to ridges of green grass for thatching and a tangle of trees, continues to be appealing to this day. The hotel offers two room rates -- the slightly more expensive rooms are on the upper story of detached chalets, giving a better view across the river valley and more privacy on the large balconies. The rooms are large and comfortable, although the beds are a little short for tall people, there aren't many electrical outlets, and the bathrooms are looking a little tired. But the beautiful thatched roofs, the little added touches of fresh hibiscus scattered around, and the deep calm atmosphere make up for all that. Plus the price is right! The same hotel chain has opened Pita Maha Resort and the Royal Pita Maha at eye-popping prices -- enjoy the same style at Hotel Tjampuhan, if not, perhaps, the same luxury.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : There is a gorgeous 2-hour mostly paved walk from the foot of the Hotel Tjampuhan, running across the river, through an old quiet temple and up along the opposite ridge, coming back through traditional Ubud villages, which should not be missed.

Pool, scenery, location

Bathroom shower always caused the floor to get flooded. Hotel spa was very dissspointing.

The hotel is set in a beautiful location in ubud. Walking distance to the shops and only an hours drive to the volcano. The hotel breakfast was not a good selection. We had a beautiful view from our hotel room where it was very relaxing. The pool was a very near and tidy area made it very relaxing. I had a facial in the spa and was not happy with it, however my husband enjoyed his massage. I think the spa is abit overpriced. Beds are fantastic. Staff are very friendly and helpful. There is wireless internet in the lobby and rest. Nice hotel to end our stay in Bali

Romantic setting, reasonably close to town (walkable), shuttle service (but see cons), good spa.

Hotel does not provide umbrellas and, in wet season that is a shame - and a lost opportunity. Other hotels of this quality had their customers wandering around Ubud with branded umbrellas - which was good customer serivce and a good advetisement. The shuttle bus last return visit was at 10.30pm. This is a little early and a final pick up at 11pm or 11.30pm would be useful. The fan only room was OK but air con would have been better. Bathroom was OK but needs updating.

The Tjampuhan is a stylish hotel in a fantastic river valley setting. Although there are lots of steps (45 to my room) it was not a problem and added to the charm. The hotel has a romantic setting in the river valley and is reasonably close to town - which is walkable in 10 mins. The shuttle service was welcome but could run more into the night (it was sometimes a bit of a rush to see a show, have dinner and get to the bus in time). I stayed with my daughter and we enjoyed it (she particularly liked the spa). The staff were helpful and tried hard to find a mobile phone charger for my daughter.

Restaurant Tip : Bumbu Bali runs an excellent cookery school!

Lush setting - a lot of green and flowers, Good breakfast, Helpful and friendly staff, Large room, and clean.

Due to poor construction, the water from the shower ran all over the floor of the bathroom.

Tjampuhan Hotel is just outside the hub of activity of Ubud, but is still a good location (10-15 min walk to shops and restaurants; has regular free shuttle service to center of town and Monkey Forest). It is very charming and calm, with nice and helpful staff. Perhaps because of the discount, we felt like we had a lower-end room which, although generally nice, was not quite worth what we paid for it.

Restaurant Tip : Murny's Warung - is a good restaurant in a nice setting, just 2-min walk from the hotel going toward Ubud center by a picturesque bridge.

The wonderful garden setting. Very nice, helpful staff.

Particularly disliked the old, dirty bathroom and lack of updated furniture and equipment in room. Did not like being overlooked on the balcony by guests in other rooms.

We felt we could have done much better than stay at this hotel. The only positives we could find were the spectacular setting, lovely garden and the friendly staff. Having a free shuttle was certainly helpful although they only leave once every hour to a pre determined stop-off point in the centre of Ubud. If you have problems with walking up and down steps this is not the place for you as the hotel is situated in a valley and all rooms and the pool are situated down many flights. Our room had a large balcony but it was overlooked by rooms on either side and we did not feel a sense of privacy. Our room was very tired with old furniture and broken bits and pieces like missing door knobs etc. When we asked about a fridge the staff brought one to us and plugged it in. We saw fridges being carried around the property all the time during our stay and we do wonder why they couldn't install fridges in each room. The bathroom was very grubby, dark and lacking in any modern design or equipment. The old shower head over the bath meant water went all over the floor and it was a real safety hazard. Unfortunately we will not be staying at the Tjampuhan Hotel again.

Nice Pool though no steps so access difficult Friendly Staff Good location for shopping

Dirty, mouldy mousquito infested rooms. Dark lighting Broken taps Wood rot on stairs and windows

Definitely the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. Would have checked out if any other accommodation was available. Rooms very dirty, toilet only separated from bedroom by wooden partition with no door. Shower area very mouldy and dirty. Room infested by mosquitos, management had to supply spray and mosquito coils to all guests. Loud music from adjoining property late every night.

Stunning hotel, immaculate grounds and exquisite stone carvings

No kettle, coffee, tea etc were supplied, room service didn't commence until 7am. Lots and lots of stairs.

min. 50 words Hotel Tjampuhan was an absolutely stunning hotel with exquisite stone carvings and the grounds were immaculate. The hotel provided a free shuttle bus to three locations in Ubud and the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. The ONLY downfalls of the hotel were no tea making facilities in the room (we asked for a kettle but were given no cups or coffee etc). There were also a lot of stairs. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for anyone who has trouble walking. When my young son fell asleep in the restaurant, a porter carried him to our room. Our rooms were huge and so gorgeous with an equally huge verandah that looked over the pool and ravine. I loved this hotel so much and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Great Location, Very quiet and relaxing, Friendly staff.

Bathrooms need a little tidy up. The pool was under maintenance, wold not recomend this hotel for disabled or eldrly people due to the number of steps.

My family and I loved this hotel as it was very relaxing and was in the most beautiful setting close to everything. The delicious breakfast was fast worked off by the excersise we got going up and down to our room and the spa(we didn't have to worry about overindulging) The spa was in the most beautiful setting right next to the river which added to the relaxed feeling whilst having our spa treatments. I would highly recomend this resort to anyone wishing to get away from the stresses of everyday life or from KUTA. Don't make the mistake we did and go to KUTA last do it the other way round or just stay in UBUD forget about kuta.

Restaurant Tip : The Bridge restaurant was wonderful, great food, staff and excellent value. Not far to walk either.

Friendly staff.

Electric kettles available only upon request. No fridge.

I stayed at Tjapuhan Hotel with my wife and my two young kids. There are a lot of steps to climb but that comes with the location. I liked the rustic surroundings which more than compensated for having to climb the steps everyday. There is no television in the room but that is not a con for me as the purpose of going to Bali is not to watch cable. That being said, not having basic amenities like an electric kettle and a fridge was definitely a con. They have shuttle buses which were quite useful for getting around. The staff was also quite friendly. The furniture was old but that goes with the rustic feel of the hotel. The hotel food was only okay but there are plenty of restaurants in town.

Restaurant Tip : There is a 24 hour convenience shop down the road which is useful given the lack of a fridge in the hotel room.

Great service & very lush, green rainforest surrounding. Very large hotel, spacious.. Extremely comfy beds. Love the smell of their sheets. Their room service pasta with zucchini & mozzarella could make me travel to Bali again... it was a real hit! So were the lamb chops.

Room was a bit run down, however they are renovating the hotel so chances are if you stay there the hotel will be newly done up. Cleaners did a less than fabulous job. Breakfast didn't amaze. Didn't really feel the value for money was great. The so called pool bar was absolutely 'dead', nobody there and didn't seem equipped & ready for guests... The whole place was a bit 'dead' when we were there, in fact. No minibar in room. No TV/DVD in room but there is a 'movie room' (also pretty 'dead' though).

All in all, I am really glad we stayed at this 'classic', older style hotel. It is piece of history and a lovely setting and that basically why you come to this hotel. It's location perhaps 500m from the shopping in Ubud, which I think was great. It was a bit 'pricy' considering they 'failed to deliver' on many occasions. The staff were very friendly. You get the service of a 3-4 star hotel.

Shopping Tip : Some shops off monkey forest road are really 'western' and you can find some great clothes that you haven't seen on anyone at home. Also try the fish spa on the same street - its a good fun 15 minutes.

We love the peaceful forest setting, the staff are always friendly and helpful, the swimming pools are a delight.

very few rooms have refridgerators, some furniture needs updating.

Tjampuhan is the perfect place to chill out away from the ratrace. Shuttle bus service makes it easy to get into the centre of Ubud for great resturants and shopping.Ther are lots of great walks in this area where you can meet friendly locals. This hotel has always had our rooms ready on arrival, and give you a cool towel a welcome drink and a comfortable seat to fill out check in details. We look forward to staying again.

Restaurant Tip : Indus Resturant for happy hour great views,up the hill from Tjampuhan.

An absolutely stunning location, terracing and gardening phenomenal.

Rooms minimally appointed, furnishings old and outdated. Fan speed on my a/c limited to one speed. I had to ask for the hot water heater to be turned on. During heavy morning rain, the hotel refused to supply umbrellas so that guests could access the dining room and breakfast.

I like this hotel very much, but it comes with caveats. First of all, it is expensive for what you get--and direct e-mail or fax receives no response whatever. I booked through Agoda at what I thought was an excessive price. Secondly, I suggest looking carefully before accepting any room. Mine was huge--but only partially furnished. Also, for the lame and the halt, climbs can be daunting. Located on one side of a river gorge, paths are steep and very dimly lit at night. Thirdly, this is a hotel that does things its own way. Although polite, staff are well entrenched and not particularly concerned about customer service. All that said, it is hard to imagine coming to Ubud and not staying at the Tjampuhan!

Nightlife Tip : The hotel is some distance from "city center." There is hourly shuttle service to the palace area; the downhill walk back to the hotel probably takes 20 minutes.

The setting is very soothing and relaxing with lush greenery everywhere. At night, the quietness with the natural sounds of nature is a plus for sleep. The room is very spacious and the staff is always freindly.

With each room set on the slope of the hill, the too many steps from each utilities; swimming pool, the Spa, etc. could be a problem for not-so-young guests with knee problems. The breakfast can have more varieties for guests who stay more than 2 days.

Hotel Tjampuhan is worth the experience of a balinese natural environment. The Spa treatment is very unique with the location next to the river and the sound of the river flowing completes the package. The hotel is well maintained although quite old and the room service is very attentive to the guests' needs. The fact that the hotel is not in the center of Ubud turns out to be OK with th shuttle service and peace and quietenss in returns.

Restaurant Tip : Cafe Lotus offers a wonderful dinner selection with classical Balinese drama.
