Bintan Island
The island of Bintan, easily accessed by ferries from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, leads a double life. The northern part of the island is home to Bintan Resorts (also known as Lagoi). A colony of Singapore in all but name, it is separated from the southern part of Bintan by barbed wires and armed guards. While Lagoi boasts luxurious resorts and a picture-perfect setting, the rest of Bintan is home to electronics’ factories and fishing villages.
Bintan Resorts’ sole industry is tourism and almost all Lagoi resorts are located on the beachfront, with spectacular views of the South China Sea. Further to the crystal clear waters, beautiful beaches and exotic foliage, there are also world-class spas and challenging golf courses designed by some of golf's biggest names. Most hotels on Bintan Island offer a myriad of outdoor activities, both in the water and on land. For a bit of retail therapy, visitors can choose between the Real Bandung Factory Outlet, for branded clothing at factory prices, and Pasar Oleh Oleh, a haven for all things Indonesian.
Beyond Lagoi many of the accommodations in Bintan can be found in Tanjung Pinang, the main town on the island and a true border town of Indonesia. Budget hotels in Tanjung Pinang are easy to find, and there is plenty to see in this shipping town, including the Buddhist temple and the Raja Haji Fisabillah Monument. Electronics, cameras and watches are cheaper on Bintan than in most other Asian countries and there are dining options galore to suit any palate and budget. Tanjung Pinang is the best place to catch ferries to other islands in the archipelago; a great way to see thousands of uninhabited islands with their untouched beauty.
