Best resort on the island
Lovely cottages, tasty/plentiful food, well managed
10
I lucked out with a last minute, day-before booking. I was resigned to taking a private boat from Manado port to Bunaken for 350,000 IDR but luckily the guys meeting guests were already in the port waiting for other guests and I just hitched a ride.
Frank, the owner, has built an oasis on a hilltop with handsome Minahasa-style cottages with commanding views of the sea and Manado Tua, the volcanic island neighbor of Bunaken.
I've not experienced other resorts but you can't go wrong with this resort. Food is always plentiful and very tasty! Bring your own liquor as they only have beer and you need to buy a whole wine bottle if you want some.
My only issue is that electricity is available only after 5 pm when the generator is turned on. If you need it during the day you have to go to the dining area, but it's not always available there either. Power was unavailable in the entire resort for one day when I was there (I was told that the power connection to the mainland was cut off or something).
The wifi device is on a pole beside the dining area so try to get a cottage that has unobstructed direct access to it.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
The dive shop is well managed by Sven. He always gives a thorough explanation of the following day's dive agenda although he may be too detailed on what fish we'll probably see (the English names of the fish he usually enumerated to us during his briefings were lost on my Spanish-speaking dive companions).
About diving in Bunaken: I know this island is known for its supposed incredible biodiversity. However, after diving 5 times over 2 days, I was a little disappointed. I've seen more fish in the Maldives, the Philippines, the Galapagos, Roatan and Isla del Coco. There were no big pelagics except for sea turtles. My group saw on juvenile whitetip and one ray.
What I liked most, however, were the dramatic sheer walls completely covered with hard/soft coral. I didn't notice any signs of coral bleaching (like in the Maldives). The barrel sponges were some of the largest I've seen anywhere.
Be aware that there is very strong current in some of the popular sites. I dove in 5 different sites and there was very strong current in 3 of them.

Great views from the balcony of your villa
Well designed villas, big bathrooms, nice furniture, good dive shop
6.7
This is a small but great resort in a stunning location for those wanting to dive the Bunaken marine park. The management is a bit disorganised when it comes to pickups and transfers and noone really greets you when you arrive. the food while fresh and varied is often charred grilled to dryness (eg the fish was always overcooked) and quite repetitive if you are staying a week ( (eg very boring breakfasts). And best to bring your own spirits if you want to drink them as the fridge was stocked with empty bottles! . Overall i did love the thought gone into the design of the resort and would stay again. And Sven at the associated dive shop runs a very good operation.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Do Rays point dive site and the dolphin tour
