Overall satisfied with hotel but atrocious city

the rooms are big but a bit dated. clean room and bed linnen. bathroom was spacious but the hairdryer seemd more like a hoover than anything else. tv reception was no good but they fixed this and there were plenty channels. the breakfast is great, the buffet ones you have at the big international hotels. food was good (coffee not!) but it felt manic as all the other guests went crazy for the food as if they haven't had a proper meal in days. wifi connection is ok, two computers available at reception but very slow. the staff at reception were helpful enough but not the most cheerful people you will see. we appreciated that they provided free of charge airport transfers. the food at the hotel restaurant was nice. most indonesian restaurants (in touristic places) charge an extremely annoying service and government charge of 20% on top of your bill which is extremely misleading when you order. expect to pay an average of $10 per person at the hotel restaurant which is probably worth it because we didn't found any good places to eat in town. we would not recommend visiting this city but if worst comes to worst, we would recommend staying in this hotel.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Don't go to Medan at all! In every possible aspect, this was the worst city we have ever been to: unfriendly people, horrible traffic, no sights (except the mosque), no good food except in the big international hotels, horrible airport, tourist unfriendly vibe in general. We stayed in the hotel most of the time wishing our stay in Medan would come to an end.

Good place to stay also the interior is kind of dark and restaurants are not in the neighborhood. The swimming pool is nice for kids.

This was our second stay in this hotel within a week. On this occasion we were given a standard room instead of the Superior room that we had booked. A quick visit to reception had this rectified efficiently.
Please see my earlier review for more information. Only real quibble was from my wife who complained of the lack of light over the bathroom mirror.
Shopping Tip:
There are lots of shopping malls in Medan. The Sun Plaza is only a few minutes walk from the hotel. Further away, but in our view a better mall is the Plaza Medan Fair.

Great hotel with lousy service!
Location seems central to most part of the city and airport. Security is good!

1st sense at the hotel . Unfriendly staff at the reception. They seems to have over worked.
When i check in at a t 230pm, the rooms are not make up yet. toilets are washed and the beds are. Done. There are bed bugs and mossier in my room. Called hse keeping for help. With 2 calls and 1 1/2 hours later, still no one in sight! Very disappointing service attitude!!!
Eventually I ve to go bed wo my problem solve. Really disappointed!
Even through location is good, will not recommend nor consider this hotel in my next visit!
Travel tip:
Medan city small. So this need not be the best option in terms of location.

Hotel Danau Toba claims a 5 star rating. It may have been 5 star at one point, but the hotel is old and the rooms are in need of renovation (signs around the hotel apologise for any inconvenience caused during renovation, so perhaps it is happening). In my view a 3 star rating is more appropriate and this is reflected in the room tariff. The hotel is still excellent value for money.
Despite being in need of renovation, the rooms are clean and comfortable. The hotel has an excellent swimming pool and a good fitness centre.
The food in the restaurant is good and the buffet breakfast is excellent.
Restaurant Tip:
The old colonial 'Tip Top' restaurant is about 15 minutes walk and well worth a visit for a piece of nostalgia.

Nice and helpful staff. Pool in the garden. Good food. A gym is just outside the hotel but having many features including tennis court. Close to a mall for shopping or just going out. More interesting restaurants are around the corner.

nice rooms but recommended to stay rooms located either in 4th or 5th floor coz looks bigger and good view of the swimming pool...friendly staffs and good facility as pubs and disco is in the hotel vicinity...
