Good Budget Hotel near town

A reasonably nice hotel near town. The rate is competitive with similar hotel in the area. I like its proximity to town but it is also in the middle of busy roads and traffics around it can be frustrating sometimes. It is best to call a taxi like bluebird before hand. The room is of reasonable size and bed is comfortable. At the back of the hotel are many eateries.

Great stay for budget traveller

The main attractions in Medan city, Istana Maimun & Masjid Raya is just 15 minutes walking distance from this hotel. Room is spacious with comfortable mattress. Yummy buffet breakfast and we enjoyed a whole relaxing morning with the tea, coffee and pancake, food & fruit etc. Behind the hotel you can find a China town selling local chinese dishes, however the food is double the price (approx IDR 24K) we had at Lake Toba. A basic 3 star hotel you can experience for a short stay in Medan.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
15 minutes walking distance to Istana Maimun & Masjid Raya or you can rent a car for the local sight seeing tour. There are many rental car available in front of the hotel which you can negotiate the price with them or you can ask the hotel to arrange a meter taxi.

They allowed early Check in to hotel, and happily provided city maps for me when asked.
There is a pillar in my room but the receptionist has informed me earlier and shown me the room to see if I accept or not.
Good service as I found out the safety box wasnt functioning and the technicians were at the door minutes after I called.
Not many choices on breakfast but the food menu changes everyday I was there. Food is ok
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
You may hire a "Becak" for half/full day to visit the attractions in Medan as they are reachable by Becak.
There are lots of shop behind the hotel (exit via the restaurant) and you may try them out.

5 Stars Hotel with 3 Stars Rate

It is a good experience staying at Swiss-Belinn, it is a 3 stars hotel with 5 stars standard. Staffs are friendly and can speak good English.
There is live-band performing during night at Barelo (restaurant behind the lobby), the foods is nice and not costly. Remember to visit the back street of the hotel (can access via the Barelo backdoor), there are many variety of foods available, like chinese noodles, indonesia satay, and the local-made chinese bicuits, cheap and delicious.
Shopping Tip:
Should go Medan Fair Mall or local called it 'Big Carrefour', all the stuffs are there including electrical, jewelry, clothing. I bought all my photography stuffs there, like Nissin flashlight, Tamron lens, remote controls, all in best price that couldn't find in Singapore or Malaysia.

I found this place a pretty smart hotel for the price. It's a short taxi/becak ride from several shopping malls, pretty close to the airport, and there are very many local food places in surrounding streets. The area itself is not the nicest part of Medan - hot, full of traffic and polluted by day, and can be a bit dodgy by night: one fellow guest had her handbag snatched in the street outside, needing stitches after being dragged by the assailant's motorbike, although I had no problems personally. Good buffet breakfast, smart rooms, efficient staff. Internet in the rooms is by ethernet cable only, not wifi, so no good if you're using a phone or tablet or two want to use it at once.
Hotel Feature Tip:
Avoid the unmetered taxi drivers who tout for business outside, they overcharge hugely. Get reception to ring you a BlueBird taxi instead.
