The location of this hotel is great. It's situated right in the middle of the city (Orchard Road) Close to everything. People are friendly.. could be too friendly.
The hotel is under re-constructions at the moment and getting to the rooms can be quite tricky (maze like). Could also hear a slight vibrations and noise in the morning due to the hammering etc. - can't wait to see the finished product though.. - will definitely go back there again.
Overall am happy with the service and room. Internet could be better (please interview Wifi) and free of charge. Most hotels in europe are now free of charge.

location, breakfast, swimming pool
rooms are a little long in the tooth
If in Semarang, you will hardly find a hotel in a better downtown-location. the hotel could be rated as 3.5-star by international standards, though some of the rooms are a little long in the tooth and the carpet is worn, as is the furniture. Free WiFi available in all deluxe rooms, which is a plus.
the breakfast is just amazing and already a proper reason to stay there. there is a nice pool too, and if it is very hot in Semarang (which is 365 days a year) you can connect to the attached airconditioned shopping-mall without even leaving the building. the hotel offers a free shuttle to airport or train-station, which is great, but call them beforehand to inform them about your arrival time.
even Semarang has seen several hotel-openings in the past 2-3 years, and competition is tough these days, this long-time-favorite is still a good option to base yourself. recommended
Hotel Feature Tip : Semarang's GARUDA-ticketing office is located at the hotel's ground floor near the lobby, which is another PLUS

great Breakfast, nice bathroom, good Location, Free in-room WIFI that was actually working (deluxe room only)
not the best value for money in town nowadays, carpet worn in most of the rooms.
in big cities, location is a very important issue. and location is actually one of the the Horison's biggest assets. compared to other hotels in town (several openings of 3-4 star hotels in the past two years), it is not the best value for money and the rooms need to be upgraded or re-furnished sooner or later. I particularly did not like the ugly run-down carpet with plenty of stains (but ALL Horison-Hotels in Indo have the same style of carpet). the room itself is big, the bathroom spotless and spacious. the breakfast was known to be the best in town, but other 4-star-hotels are making an effort to compete with the Horison these days. the Pool is nice too, big enough for a decent swim. the hotel is part of the biggest shopping-complex in Semarang, so whatever you want to buy, or want to eat/drink, you dont even have to leave the hotel for that, as several doors connect it directly with the two malls.
free airport- or railway-station transfer is provided, which is a big plus (though a plethora of Taxis are waiting just a stonethrow away at the main entrance of the shopping-mall and they are cheap (and yes, they DO use the meter. if one doesnt, just get out and take the next one)
another PLUS is the fact, that the local GARUDA-office is located at the ground floor of the hotel (around 8 flights a day to Jakarta), as well as the office of LINUS AIR (5th floor, in the unlikely event that you want to fly to Pangkalan Bun. they dont fly SRG - Jakarta anymore). the main reason for me to stay at the Horison several times already, is the fact that ALL Horison hotels now offer free in-room-WIFI (at least in the Deluxe rooms). A smart move ! without that, I would have probably tried another one of those recently opened hotels, or even the inexpensive IBIS in a good location which opened few months ago.
Restaurant Tip : several nice restaurants, particularly for seafood, with great view over downtown Semarang can be found on the steep road to UPTOWN. the temperature is noticeable colder and it's nice to sit there during a cool evening, watching the lights of downtown SMG and have a decent and moderately priced dinner. you will need a taxi to get there, and one to get back to your hotel (but the Restaurants will call one for you, so don't worry). if you have more time to kill, you should consider an overnight-trip to the mountainous area of Ambarawa and visit the Candi Gedong Songo, some ancient Hindu monuments, tacked in a lovely environment. nothing overly spectacular, but pleasant for a nice overnight- or weekend-trip. plenty of small guesthouses and hotels can be found in that area, and during the week, you will have most of those places for yourself. bring long-sleeve-shirts, as it can get cold in the evenings. if you are a Westerner, you will probably be the only one there.....
