Lovely hotel with Javanese atmosphere
strategically located, large rooms, coffee shop with life music, make you feel at home in Java

I worked and lived in Surabaya 25 yrs ago and at that time stayed often in Elmi Hotel. The hotel looks the same as 25 yrs ago, but well maintained and renovated. The same as 25 yrs ago, you can have good Indonesian food in the coffee shop while listening to Javanese life music. Combined with the friendly staff, it makes you feel at home in Java. From Elmi hotel you can walk to Tanjungan Plaza, Surabaya Plaza, the Town Hall and many other attractions. The hotel is located in a neighborhood with many beautiful colonial buildings.

Nice hotel, pity about the location and surrounds

We stayed at the Elmi Hotel in Surabaya for 3 days, after flying in from Denpassar.
The reception staff were great, allowing us to book in very early with no excess cost.
The room was quite acceptable, neat, tidy and with, shock/horror, hot sufficient water.
The view was nothing to shout about, just overlooking the very large rooftop pool (very clent and spacy).
Food and drinks at the coffee shop, restaurant was costly but certainly an oasis within a surrounding desert of entertainment/no bars/no restaurants etc. Entertainment each night was great, with the young female singer making a good fist of "Akky breaky heart" sic.
Outside, along the streets of SWurabaya was totally unexciting and explains the lack of tourist information and visits. In fact the only restaurants for food and perhaps a Bintag were to be found in the two Plazas, Surabaya and Toburnan.
The visit to the port was a waste of time, it was like Wooloomooloo in Sydney some 30 years ago (Yuk) and the surrounding Chinatown grotty.
Surabaya Zoo, as expected, was overfull with overbred animals in enclosures needing attention and with a residual lingering smell. Much has recently been written about Zoo problems and perhaps some much needed money and expertise will improve the areas.
In end, keep to the islands or the less hectic areas in Bali
Travel tip:
Go with the realization that this area is predominatly Muslim and they limit alcohol and the type of fun, which we take for granted elsewhere.
Unlike Bali, no Warungs, no Losmen, No ready alcohol, no excitement and restaurants of any note

I liked the pool area, nice and big and deep swimming pool outside ( i think the biggest in the city) also had a pool table out there. Good food downstairs and a nice little lounge next to the resturant in the lobby to pass some time. I would stay again if I return

the hotel room was a little dated, they are currently updating the tv's in the rooms to lcd flatscreens, but there is a lack of power socket outlets, lan internet & wifi in the room.
the hotel overall was ok, price was reasonable for the centre of the city and staff were very approachable and helpful.

the stay here was simply above our expectation. well, we didn't have very high expectation for the price but it was a decent stay. service was okay, room was quite big, no problem with the shower. for the price, yes i'd love to stay here again.

The description of the hotel states it is 0.5km from the train station. Add a good 2 or 3 kilometres. It is not walking distance with luggage.

Older but nice hotel
Close to Gubeng train station

This is an older hotel, but certainly clean and the rooms and bathrooms were comfortable. The food in the hotel is quite good and all the staff were most helpful. Its about 10-15 minutes walking distance to a large mall. Its a 10-15 minute taxi to the Gubeng train station. Free wifi in the rooms good. Lots of international TV stations.
