Nicely renovated hotel but poor arrangement

garden hotel has been "our family hotel" upon our trip to surabaya.. great location with easy access everywhere. this is our second stay within 2012. our room was newly renovated but the whole arrangement was a total mistake. we could not open the fridge as the cabinet door was so closed to the bed. we could not lock the door as the lock was way wrongly attached.
one thing : always ask for a non connecting room. ours was a connecting room and our "next door" keep on trying to open the connecting door day and night.
Hotel Feature Tip:
always ask for a non connecting room. kindly have more staff in the dinner during breakfast. most empty tables were still full with dirty plates. not to mention that the food refill was unbearable. and overall condition of the dinner was so messy.

overall the hotel exterior and staff is good. sadly, the room I booked comes with a shower only although in the hotel/agoda website, it is said that it comes with a bath tub. Also, when I checked in, the room is smelled cigarettes. Not nice. I also got a room in the corner next to the emergency exit door. Probably it is because I booked via agoda? cheaper and got all the minority of the hotel?
Shopping Tip:
The hotel located near shopping malls such as Grand City and Tunjungan Mall. You need to use taxi tho'. Try Dapur Desa Restaurant, nice meals there.

We took 2(two) Superior Rooms. Quite nice hotel rooms, but their housekeeping staff forgot to put towels in both restrooms when we checked in.
We asked for iron and the board. They gave us a steam iron.
Few minutes later, the water came out of it and wet all over the table and floor.
Breakfast was so so, but lunch at Coffee Shop was unsatisfying.
Glasses were not clean enough, food taste were lousy and the waitress got our order incorrectly.
At the end of our stay, we had inflexible check out time.
Restaurant Tip:
I recommend you to dine outside the hotel. Their food were lousy.

It's been while since we stayed in a truly nice hotel. Garden Palace Surabaya certainly meets (even exceeds) our expectation. My family checks in around 3 p.m. We used our redeem points from Agoda so it was a good bargain.
The room AC was cool, room was big and clean, bed is of good quality. We traveled in a group of 3 persons (hubby, myself and my 7 year old kid). Kiddo constantly kicks around when sleeping so we were pleasantly surprised to know the sofa was huge and could function as a proper bed (complete with pillows) so everybody got quality sleep.
The bathroom has a bathtub, hot /cold water, standard amenities.
The breakfast was tasty. Perhaps for westeners, the food selection was not much, but for Indonesians / Asians it was satisfying. The fried noddle is the best -- not too greasy, tasty, excellent!
The hotel lobby used to be connected to two roads: Jalan Yos Sudarso and Jalan Pemuda. Now it only has one face: to Jalan Yos Sudarso. The other building on Jalan Pemuda seemed to be a different / smaller hotel with its own management. Garden Palace is situated next to a shopping mall (Plaza Surabaya), WTC (famous for trading handphones / gadgets), and the ex Radisson Hotel.
We had a great time staying there. No complaint whatsoever.
