- Great location. - Nice hotel - Good facilities

- Need to walk far to the room. Elevator located far from the room.

The hotel had comfortable room and situated at a convenient location. It had all the convenient facilities avaialable and it's easy to go around Yogya from this hotel. The massage spa is also wonderful after a long day touring in Yogya.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Avoid going to Borobodur or Prambanan in the afternoon as the weather is hot. Better to go early morning.

Quality and Value for money, especially for senior business management travellers. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Staff are friendly and overall ambience of the hotel is charming and dignified.

location is slightly off the main Malioboro street however, this is not a major issue as the main areas are still accessible.

This hotel offers attractive value to the discerning traveller who wants a convenient business address during their stay which also enhance their image to their business counterparts who may pick them up. It has an old world charm with updated amenities and you will feel comfortable from the moment you step into the lobby. The rooms and public areas are very well appointed and for those who do not like cold large modern hotels where you have to compete with large tour groups, this will be a good choice. I will continue to select this hotel for my future stay unless the cost escalates to a point where it becomes unaffordable.Good if you want a relaxing stay.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : For those adventurouse enough to explore on their own, you can take a public bus right in front of the hotel to go to Malioboro Street, Prambanan world heritage site.

None essentially, except that the hotel was unable to change large denominations of the local currency (Rupiah) to smaller denominations

Before choosing my accomodation for my stay in Yogyakarta, I had checked out the Customer Reviews for the various hotels listed by Agoda. The reviews for the Phoenix were mainly positive but one can never ever be sure until one gets to experience the hotel personally. And what a wonderful and memorable experience it was. The Phoenix comes with all the amenities and trappings that one would expect from any modern hotel but it retains an old world charm that would endear it to any discerning guest. It's a pity that I did not get to try out its spa or its gym, due to a packed itinerary that included a pre-sunrise climb up Mt Merapi and excursions to Borobudur and Prambanan, but there is no doubting the excellent level of room comfort and, except for the problem i had with securing smaller denominations of the local currency, the admirable promptness of response whenever I had a service request. The location of the hotel was excellent, with a 24-hour convenience store less than 100 metres away, beside which is the Tiga Nyonya Restaurant, an oasis of epicurean delights. The Malioboro Street, the main shopping street in Jogja was also nearby as was the Kraton (the Sultan's Palace). While I usually eat outside of any hotels that i stay in, i did have one meal sent up to my room - Mangut Kerapu Lolos Duri, a dish based on an ancient Yogyakarta recipe, which was served with steam rice and, on request, a not insignificant portion of sambal terasi. It turned out to be one of the best meals that i had during my stay in Jogja. The staff members were very welcoming and always had a smile on their faces. When i had asked for names and locations of good restaurants offering local fare, the recommendation provided by one of the hotel staff was spot on and led to my enjoying a simple, inexpensive yet delicious lunch of rice with bebek goreng (fried duck) at a nearby eatery. In summary, the Phhoenix is a hotel that i would highly recommend to any visitor to Jogja. Expectations of

Travel tip : Re restaurants, one should experience the Tiga Nyonya at least once during one's stay in Jogja. Its menu encompasses dishes not only of Central Java but also from the islands of Sumatera to the west and Papua to the east. For something much simpler but no less delightful, ask the staff for directions to the Bebek Goreng eatery. Re shopping, while Mirota Batik on the Malioboro Street does attract the most customers, if one is looking out for silk batik shirts or silk batik material for men, do check out the other batik shops along the street, for eg Ningrat Batik. The Behringharjo Market is also a must visit. Re excursions and sightseeing, the two UNESCO Heritage Sites - Borobudur and Prambanan - should be at the top of any visitor's list. I would recommend doing a sunrise visit to Borobudur and a sunset visit to Prambanan on a day that the Ramayana Ballet is being performed at the outdoor stage at the foreground of the Prambanan temples. Do check the schedule for the Ballet and arrange to visit the Prambanan temples on the same day. For something requiring greater exertion, do plan a night climb up Mt Merapi (one of the region's, if not the world's, most active volcanoes) to catch the sunrise from the summit.

Charming historic character of the building. Immaculately clean, good sized rooms. Truely a 5 star hotel!

Restaurant - a la carte - has not enough Indonesian/Asian dishes, but too many western dishes. Due to the hotel been a historic building the pool is relatively small with limited deck chairs and limited sunshine.

The Phoenix hotel is a wonderful historic building, which has been renovated to the highest standard. There is a lot to discover: Old photographs, Javanese decoration & colonial style funiture. The rooms are a very good size and immaculatly clean. The rooms are bright and airy and make you feel immediately at home. The staff is attentive, friendly and very helpful. On arrival and availability guests get automaticalliy upgraded to a higher room category. The location is good for all the excursions around Yogyakarta. The rates Agoda provides are excellent value for money!

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The temple of Borodubur is an absolute must for any visit to Yogyakarta!

Swimming pool, lovely breakfast and friendly staff.

Expensive food / drink.

This is a beautiful hotel with lovely friendly staff. Our room had a balcony overlooking the swimming pool, which we really liked (although we could have done with more than one chair!). The buffet breakfast is extensive but expensive compared to others we had elsewhere in Indonesia. But the decadent feel of the hotel makes it all worthwhile.

- Good quality for the - Very helpful stuff - Placed on the central street of the city - Swimming pool and sauna as hotel services

- You can expect more services from 5-stars hotel

Very good for the money they asked. The price can be compared to the 2 or 3 stars hotels in Europe. Could be recommended even for those who are traveling on the budget. The place where you can relax fully after daily trip to local points of interesting. Or just enjoy your vacation sitting near the swimming pool. A lot of arrangements organized by the hotel weekly.

Travel tip : Booking the transfer from the airport to the hotel can be cheaper than catching the taxi at the airport directly.

Beautiful Building, friendly staff, good food, service, etc.

Nowhere to walk (for families) except within the hotel grounds.

Pros and Cons as above. Only additional comment to make is that planning an itinerary re what to do in Jogya and the environs is to be strongly recommended. Unless hanging around the hotel is what you want to do.

Beautiful Hotel, lovely building

Rooms a bit small

Overall the hotel was really splendid. The old world charm of the place was spectacular. The food and service were also good, and the details of the hotel were very satisfying. We loved the decor and the restaurant. The bar was excellent. The other services provided such as transport etc. was also very organized and satisfying.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The hotel is very good at arranging any sightseeing trips that guests require. We depended completely on the hotel for our trips and they were very good with it.

Room is comfortable. Hotel is clean and beautiful. Nice decoration.

None.

The room is small but comfortable and nice. It is traditional. Everyday they give salak fruit and jelly candy, and can ask for more mineral water for free. The swimming pool is small. Staffs are friendly and helpful. If you walk for 10-15 minutes, you will reach Malioboro. There are lots of traditional things in there. There are stall near Malioboro that sells seafood and it is really nice. Hotel is quite near airport.

Shopping Tip : You can use becak to reach Malioboro for about 10,000 rupiah(About US$1)

-beautiful pool, courtyard, interior decor and artwork throughout the building; friendly and accomodating staff;

-noisy a/c unit on the east side of the building, facing the street; -staff not sufficiently knowledgeable in business office;

I spent only three days in Yogyakarta and left wishing I could stay much longer. The temples were wonderful, the hotel is very convenient to both local tourist sites and shopping, and it is all extremely affordable. The hotel is beautiful, comfortable, and definitely worth the money but I did have a couple sore points. First, the second night I could not fall asleep due to a very deep vibrating sound that seemed to make the bed shake. I didn't notice it the first night because I was exhausted, tho it did disturb me a bit in the morning. Apparently there was a faulty a/c unit outside. The noise from the balcony was a weird shrieking grind, but inside it was incredibly low and disturbing. The front desk manager already seemed to be aware of the problem, and agreed to relocate me... three doors down on the same hall, where the noise was still noticeable, only slightly less so. Not an ideal solution. Secondly, the day I left I was hoping to send a package home with some gifts for family. I spent about 20 minutes in the business center and made several phone calls trying to find out more information about the courier service they advertised, only to hear from FED-EX that pick-up was not available on a Saturday afternoon. The business office was not very knowledgeable about the very services they offer. Other than that, it was a wonderful trip and I would definitely stay there again, though not in the east wing.

Shopping Tip : If you hire a driver or guide, avoid shopping at the stores they bring you to, and any offers of 'cheap' sales at tourist sites. Straight down the street from the Tugu monument (at the intersection nearest the hotel) there are buskers all along Malioboro and many shops which sell the same merchandise at prices that range from very reasonable to incredibly cheap. Just head south on Jalan Malioboro, and the shops start after you cross the railroad tracks, about a 15-20 minute walk from the hotel, and only minutes more to several tourist sights. The hotel provides a useful map with more details.

Classic hotel in good location (very close to Malioboro street). Rooms and bathrooms spacious and nicely decorated. Complimentary candies and water is a pleasant gesture. Very good choise for staying in Jogja.

Breakfast not included into room rate and extra payment is quite pricey given general price level in Jogja.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The main attractions of Jogja in my opinion are otside Jogja itself lie outside Jogja itself and those are Borobudur and Prambanan - must to see historical sites.

The hotel is close to the main street of Malioboro and the train station and easy to get to from the airport. The building is one of the oldest in Yogya, meaning it has lots of charm and atmosphere. The pool is a reasonable size, which also has a sauna in the health club attached. All in all this is a fantastic hotel

There was some noise from neighbouring rooms, but this is to be expected due to the age of the building - it certainly wasn't more noticeable than in more modern hotels

I have been to Yogya before, and when I booked this hotel I actually had thought it was in a slightly different location. But it was all for the better, as the hotel is in a great location - you can walk to Malioboro Street in around 10-15 minutes (or there are plenty of becaks to offer you a ride - make sure you bargain!). I travelled during Ramadan, so I think a lot of the roadside stalls in the area were closed, but the hotel had a nice buffet available, there was a Pizza Hut within a few metres walk of the front gate, and Malioboro has plenty of eat options. I have highlighted the pros and cons above, but want to make clear that I found my stay at this hotel to be far better than expected. The staff were uniformly friendly, the room was large enough with all the modern facilities you would expect from a Mercure hotel. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel!

Hotel Feature Tip : If you are a bit tired after a long flight (like I was), make sure to pay attention to your room key. The tag that goes into the wall for the power (like with many hotels around the world) is actually not the room key. I took this by reflex and ended up locking myself out of the room!

Beautiful hotel previously private residence which gives ambiance and makes experience different to large chain hotels. Convenient location

Swimming pool closes 18.00h

We are very happy to have experienced the atmosphere and comfort of the Phoenix Hotel. The history is interesting and colonial style adds ambiance and cachet. Generally I avoid large hotels as they can be impersonal - this was the opposite. The pool and lush vegetation are special. Location of the hotel was very convenient with easy access to the local town by foot. We would definitely recommend Phoenix as a destination!
