Cozy, local experience

The location, food, massage chair

This is a truly local experience (tatami mats, futons you make-up yourself and public bath) where the owners barely speak any English but do everything they can to be incredibly hospitable. They actually provide ALL the amenities that are customary at a nice place to stay in Japan and BOTH breakfast and dinner, which is very nice after a long journey and no desire to find food when the weather is cold and wet! The meals were all-out, proper Japanese ones laid out with flourish that was a feast both for the eyes as well as palates. The bath had all the necessary toiletries and conveniences and the location half-way up the hill between Gora train station and the beginning of the Hakone ropeway was VERY convenient and yet it was in a nice quiet residential-like neighborhood. I suppose it was high season with lots of tourists so I suppose that is why it was pricey so if the building itself was a little less run-down I would probably be much happier with what I paid. Not necessarily my first recommendation but I would stay here again if it made sense and the building was at least somewhat re-furbished.
