The Golden Pavilion
Originally built in 1397 as a retirement home for a Shogun, the Golden Pavilion is a majestic structure in the natural surrounding of Kyoto. There can’t be many buildings throughout the world that have two entire stories covered in gold flake and one can imagine, that since this was done for the Shogun, how important a man he must have been. Kyoto’s hotels are nearby and varied and it is easy to understand why this is such a popular destination. Its awe-inspiring beauty has been a great inviter for jealousy as well as tourism and that is probably why it has been intentionally burned down twice.
The building is surrounded by a glorious Japanese strolling garden whose style is called kaiyū-shiki, and the mirror pond in the front is equally as tranquil. Many stones have been placed in the pond that recreated the Buddhist creation story. Many hours can be spent at this location admiring the surroundings and thinking about what it would have been like to be one of the original inhabitants.
Sine the most recent burning of the structure in 1950, the structure has been restored to its previous glory, perhaps even more so. The artwork inside the Pavilion have been completely restored and because the flaking nature of gold flake (imagine that) the exterior has been restored with a thicker more modern variety. Many of Kyoto’s hotels see this attraction as a main reason for visiting the area and have positioned themselves in close proximity to it.
