Front desk staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay, speaking good English and offering advice on how to get around in Kyoto. The hotel's central location proved ideal for subway access, but required a longer walk (10 minutes) to the nearest bus stop. The hotel was considerably better than previous reviews had indicated.
Extremely convenient location - at junction of Kyoto's two subway lines.
Small but well equipped room with tea/coffee making facilities and free internet access
Room decoration a little shabby - but it is an older well established hotel
- Travel tip : Nearby museum restaurant

There was a kind of mite or similar bug in the beds you filled with painful stings and very annoying. The double room was very small with little space to open suitcases. The bathroom was tiny, you just arrived to enter and close.
Good treatment.
Mites very annoying. Room small.

The Oike area in which the Gimmond is located is an artsy neighbourhood full of classy bars, restaurants and boutiques. I'd recommend an izakaya-pub called Apolo (for great beef and atmosphere!), the cafe biblioteque Hello and clothes shops such as Rosso or Summer, that stock japanese and european designers (think ultracool flatsies and plenty of See by Chloe t-shirts), and the beautiful Paul Smith shop, located in a converted bath house. All and all, it offers a great contrast with the temples and traditional settings that attract people to Kyoto, without having to spend the evening at the hectic Shijo and Sanjo avenues (more like Pachinko-crazy alleys). Also ,the market is nearby and is great for a stroll and for cheap and cheerful lunches. Another pro of the hotel is obviously the price, yens away from other ones in the very expensive city of Kyoto.
Price, location, helpful staff, the desk offers change for most foreign currencies
Tiny rooms even for japanese standards. Slightly grim and old fashioned decor. It doesnt offer free hot drinks or free internet use as others hotels do.
- Shopping Tip : Serious fashionistas will delight in the nearby streets. As well as Rosso, Summer and Paul Smith, I'd point at the APC boutique. Yo'd find stores similar to those in Daikanayama, Tokyo, but set in traditional low-ceiling japanese houses.

The hotel is good in terms of situation. The staff was very friendly and helpful. In terms of foord the only possibility is to go to an adjacent restaurant where the service is very slow. Another point is the size of the room which was quite small for European standard, which gives lack of comfort.
Situation of the hotel, friendliness of the staff
Poor breakfast, room very small.
Good deal

Very good choice for the money; a nice lobby, friendly staff offered good hints on public transportation, how to get to places we wished to see and provided local maps. One can easily walk from the hotel to Kyoto´s main shopping area. Clean linens and towels, good shower even if the bathroom space was minimal.
Good location at a major avenue, subway service nearby, bus stops at walking distance, friendly and helpful front desk staff, fast turn-around laundry service.
Even though I was elegible to a 10% discount at the restaurant adjacent to the hotel (direct access through the lobby) and was carrying the hotel key, I forgot to ask for the discount and the waiter failed to remind me.
No internet access from the room.

The Hotel Gimmond in centrally located for Kyoto Centre. The two subway lines (North-South and West-East) intersect at the nearest subway station making it easy to get quickly to most areas of the city. We found the staff friendly and remembered our room numbers such that the keys were in our hands at reception before we attempted any of our poor Japanese language skills. Very clean hotel and staff attentive to our needs. We would recommend this hotel strongly.
Great location, attentive staff. Choice of breakfast venues.
None.
- Shopping Tip : Very close to the Kyoto markets and main shopping area.
Old but good

I enjoyed staying at Gimmond Hotel. The hotel is located just 50mt from a subway station and just a stop to Nijo Castle (the former residence for Ieyasu Tokugawa) and that is REALLY worth to visit. The hotel itself is a bit old and the rooms are quite small for european standards but they are clean and the size is about the same for every hotel I've been in Japan, so that make them "normal size". Staff speaks good english.
I loved having LAN internet connection in the room (if you have a laptop) free of charge. That really helped to work and to keep in touch with your beloved ones.
I loved Kyoto and I'll definitely came back (for sightseeing next time) and I'll came back again at Gimmond Hotel.
Good Value for money - near subway and Nijo Castle - LAN internet connection in every room

It is very conveniently located, near the intersection of Kyoto's two subway lines. The hotel room was small, but this seems to be typical in Japan. It doesn't have a dresser, but there's a small closet (some places lack both). The staff were friendly and had satisfactory English. It has both an Italian and a Japanese restaurants; surprisingly, the Italian restaurant doesn't always have a vegetarian offering.
Location, free Internet.
Small hotel room.

I can recommend this hotel especially for its very excellent location. The best shopping districts in Kyoto are within walking distance!Room, bathroom and service worked also very well.
+ Excellent location in the center of Kyoto, near both subways and shopping districts
+ The room was spacious enough
+ Air condition worked perfectly during very hot July season
+ Service was good
- Breakfast was quite expensive
- Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Very good shopping and eating arcade underground just 200 meters from hotel
Great hotel in Kyoto

We lucked in and got there 3 days before the annual Gion festival. Streets were full every night with people in traditional costumes, very festive atmosphere.
- Restaurant Tip : Near the subway station is an inexpensive 24 hour restaurant with excellent food. Good meals at less than $10.00
