We had a great time staying at Guest House Nagomi. A unique experience in this quaint home. Proprietors were super friendly and helpful. They had great suggestions of sights to see and paces to eat. Living space was clean and well organized, rooms a decent size. Highly recommend!
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
If you get a chance, head over to Gion to try and spot actual Maiko heading to their dinner engagements. It was exciting to see this unique tradition still being carried out today. Have your cameras ready though, they're not exactly trying to stop and take pictures and they move pretty fast!

Fantastic stay - converted traditional Kyoto home

We had a wonderful 4-night stay at Guest House Nagomi. This is *such* a more authentic Kyoto experience than any hotel stay will give you. It's a converted traditional Kyoto home that you share with the owner (Hide) and his family, plus a few other travelers (depending on the dates). You'll be sharing bathroom / shower amenities, and the rooms aren't huge, but this is what it's like living in a home in Kyoto.
Hide and his family are great. From the photos on the wall, you can tell that he was a former traveler with quite a wanderlust. He speaks English, so you can get some tips from him, too. When you check in, he'll sit you down and go over the "house rules" (e.g., home is "closed" from 12pm-3pm daily, you can rent towels, bikes, washing machine, etc.). He'll also give you a small map of the neighborhood that highlights onsen / sento, restaurants, grocery stores / convenience stores, etc. Then he'll leave you to your own business if you so desire, but is available by knock on his a door for anything else.
We traveled through Japan for two weeks. This was the best stay we had. As long as you're willing to share the space with other travelers, you'll be in for a unique experience. Thanks, Hide & family!
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
The home is near Daitoku-ji. If you're arriving at Kyoto Station, take bus #9 and get off at Horikawa-Kuramaguchi (堀川鞍馬口). This is the only stop with the character for mouth (口) at the end of the name, so it shouldn't be too difficult to spot even if you don't speak Japanese. The bus is a flat 220 yen.
While staying there, the main buses you'll probably use are #9, #204, #205, and #206. Do a quick web search for "Kyoto City Bus" and you'll find a pdf ("Bus Navi") on the Kyoto city website that lays out all of the routes, in English.
