Ryokan Hirashin for a Kyoto Experience
The friendliness of the staff, the location, the price
My friends and I on a trip to Tokyo decided to overnight in Kyoto, and thought a traditional Japanese experience would be nice. First and foremost, Ryokan Hirashin Kyoto is a "hybrid" ryokan, meaning it's a hotel with ryokan style rooms. The staff was remarkably helpful and friendly, and kudos for that. In addition the location was very good being located near a major department store in the city center and literally a 3 minute walk to the entrance to the renowned Nishiki Market in Kyoto. A very and I mean very traditional Japanese breakfast was served consisting of miso soup, rice, dried salmon, and a mixture of vegetables in a broth served in a metal pot and flame. The price was reasonable for it's location, and experience. However, I did find some of the facilities to be a little run down, with some noted odors in public restrooms, and just things like worn carpet, chipped paint, and the communal onsen "bath" did also suffer from some of the same run down facility. I guess the service and friendliness of the staff made me overlook some of the appearances of the property.

Basic hotel in a good location, but not a Ryokan
Location, Staff
Very good location, helpful staff but if you're looking for a Ryokan experience, this is not it. Yes, you have 1 room with tatami and you sleep on it but that's about it. Another apartment I stayed in Kyoto had a similar room but nobody would advertise it as a Ryokan. So go there for the location but don't expect a ryokan. It's a very basic yet expensive hotel.

Affordable Ryokan in Kyoto
Near train station. Close to the market and food places. Quiet surroundings.
We wanted to experience staying at a ryokan and Hirashin is the affordable option. It's not disappointing at all. The staff are accommodating. They prepared our room quickly. No hassle during check in and check out. The staff also helped us find our way through Kyoto (showed us how to get to the tourist spots). We'll consider staying in this place again when we go back to Kyoto.

Ryokan Hirashin .. Unreasonable
We arrived at 2 pm but were told that the check in time is at 4 pm ! When asked about check out time ... Its at 10 am ! Do you really need 6 hours to clean the rooms ... very unreasonable for the price of the room. Will never come back to this ryokan. Its not even near a japanese ryokan style hotel. Stay away for me forever !

Fine Ryokan
Nice tatami rooms, good yukata for loan, clean
Generally fine, room was spacious and we could check in earlier than expected, which was a very nice touch. Breakfast was tasty! The price for what you get is okay.

Close to Shijo station so it was easy to walk there with luggage. Nishiki market & the Manga Museum close by. Staff were friendly and helpful.

A very posh hotel in busy zone of Tokyo!
Good design, comfort, location
The stay was lovely, it has a very nice entrance, you need to take the elevator to the reception, it has a very nice touch. The room is very nice, big flat screen, and the bathroom has everything that you need. The food was very good at it's Californian specific restaurant, where you can choose japanese food or american food. I would defenetly stay ere again.
