We were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful from the moment we walked in till our check out. 1 block from a massive Temple. A lot of little shops and restaurants within walking distance.5 star boutique hotel in my opinion.

large room but not functional - no space to put any clothing away, no space at the vanity for toiletries, poor lighting.
restaurant was touted as special but just adequate.

We had so much fun in Kyoto because of the very friendly and helpful staffs in Kanra. they provided us with a map and directions to all the attractions with free bicycle rental service. And unlike most hotel staff in Japan, their English were pretty good!
Will definitely go back and stay in Kanra again if we visit Kyoto again.
Especially the room is big, extremely nice in design and comfortable!
