Nice rooms. Very clean. Bathroom good. Staff pleasant.
Located in Central business area of Kyoto which isn't ideal for sightseers - but would suit business travellers.
We arrived early and they're quite strict about their 2pm check-in policy, so we had to leave our bags and come back.
Overall a lovely hotel - it borders on Chintzy but tries to be sleek. Rooms spacious (by Japanese standards). We booked with reward points which made the stay a lot cheaper. The location may not suit everyone as it's in central Kyoto which seemed to be a business area. (Which is ideal if you're a business traveller) - but most of the temples are on the outskirts of the city.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Not far from Nijo Castle.
Make sure you catch sunset at Kiyomizu Temple - absolutely breathtaking location and temple.

convenient location ,mostly when you intend to do shopping...
staff behaviour ,mostly the men ,as the ladies are more smiling ,but the word sorry cannot replace evreything.....
Many employees hanging around but not all efficient:we were stuck with their computer (using100 yens coins & we don't speak japanese),none of them were able to help, they told us one man at the frontdesk could do sthg ,they asked him but he kept on staying on the phone without any intention to shorten his conversation ,we waited & waited & finally gave up(althought the many coins put already for the computer)We have the feeling that they don't care much abut tourists thinking we never come back ,as they are much more demanded by the weddings in their chapel .We love kyoto & will come back next year with the children but won't come to this hotel ,the staff should understand their behaviour is most important to guest ,this is unforgivable for a hotel of that standard. As for the room with city view ,we looked out the window & have a very "nice view"of 2 big skyscrapers hiding everything, nice indeed ...)the hotel was not full when we stayed for 2 nights there ,why that uncommercial gesture towards tourists who come from so far away We don't think we'll recommend this hotel

The hotel was in a great position. Very clean and well decorated.
The hotel staff were very helpful. We had booked two nights in a semi-double but then decided to stay another night. Unfortunately all the semi-doubles had gone so booked a standard room for our last night. When it came to the change, it went so smoohly. While we were out sightseeing, our luggage was moved to the new room and we returned to find that even our milk in the fridge had been moved, with a polite note to let us know. There was no disruption to our stay whatsoever. The hotel is ideally positioned for sightseeing, being within walking distance of Nijo Castle, the shopping areas and Ginza. There is a Family Mart across the road for supplies of coffee tea and cakes etc. An internet shop is two minutes down the road. There is a free-standing church within the hotel - a superb wedding venue.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Go to Katsura Imperial Villa. Catch a train from Shijo Karasuma - just down the road from hotel - to Hankyu Katsua Station and then a taxi to the Villa. Outstanding Japanese gardens. You need to get a pass from the Office in the grounds of the Kyoto Imperial Palace first or you will not be let in.

Warm atmosphere, beautifully decorated room, a lot of facilities for woman, fashion magazine, beautiful bathroom package.
I could not find any garden or swimming pool inside the hotel but did not ask either.
Hotel Monterey is very easy to find, just take exit to Sanjo road from the subway exit and cross the road and turn left, you will find the hotel.
I am quite surprised to see this hotel, very English all the way. Staff are very friendly and spoke good English so we got a good assistance. The room facilities are superb especially the bathroom package, they even provide a nice pouch where you can take it home. We were given a ladies floor, everything is soo nicely decorated and quite feminine in this floor. Another surprise is there is a chapel inside the hotel. Overall very very nice, I will certainly take this hotel on my next trip to Kyoto.
Travel tip : There is a beautiful cafe next to the hotel and the stationery shop near hotel is very nice.

Room layout, bathroom, decor, location, staff
I picked Hotel Monterey Kyoto because of the high reviews and we were not disappointed! the location was perfect for us as we wanted to visit the Nishiki Market which ended up by chance being just a couple blocks! The staff were very friendly and could speak english which made it easy for us to communicate. The room is very modern, the bathroom is a good size and the bed is very very comfortable! We would definately book our stay at Hotel Monterey Kyoto again!! Thanks!

Great price for a really nice hotel.
Hotel wasn't listed on any maps in the subway or on the kyoto inn map that is widely distributed in the U.S.
The room was a good size and all the furniture was modern. Liked the free LAN internet and the daily newspaper left at our front door. Location is great for accessing the subway and bus lines and it was easy to get to the different points of the city. The staff was very helpful in directing us on how to get to different sightseeing points and restaurant locations throughout the city.
Hotel Feature Tip : concierge service was really hopeful in trying to get restaurant recommendations and reservations.

very central location, nice rooms, very clean, friendly and helpful personnel, English spoken
breakfast very expensive (2500 yen)
I stayed there for a congress. Transportation from railway station to hotel and from hotel to International Congress Center very easy with underground "K" line, which stops at two blocks from hotel entrance. Lots of little shops in the neighborhood. I recommend the Hotel!
Restaurant Tip : Instead of taking the expensive hotel breakfast, I went to one of the small restaurants in the old town streets, just across the main street from the hotel entrance, for a quarter of the price (western and Japanese breakfast).

Value for money, modern furnishings, helpful staff.
Expensive coffee in rooms and at dining room.
The staff here were extremely helpful and polite. They made you feel at home and that nothing was too much trouble. The hotel appeared to have been modernized and looks very stylish. The rooms are not a bad size though there should be free coffee instead of 300 yen which is too expensive. Value for money in general was excellent especially for Kyoto, which can be expensive for tourists.
Restaurant Tip : Eat noodles and at convenience stores to save a lot of money.

Very new and clean. Great location. Nice amenities in the bathroom. Spring water in the tub is nice. Good buffet breakfast. I like the special deal you get for pre-paying for breakfast.
Internet access is inconvenient. You have to pay Y100 for 10 minutes of time, the computer is locked down to not allow more than one browser window, and there's no printer.
This is a very comfortable hotel and a great deal in Kyoto. It is shiny and new and conveniently located by the subway. The staff is also super helpful and friendly and speaks fluent English. They have really useful bus maps and cheat sheets for things like ATMs if you ask for them. I think it would be good if they offer them when you check-in, but that is not a big deal. The only thing that I found needed improvement is that Internet access is inconvenient. You either have to use the dumb terminal in the lobby or go to the Internet Cafe near the hotel. I feel like this makes no sense for a hotel that is this nice. It should have a small room with a real computer and a printer. However, for the money and our experience, I would totally stay here again.

Staff, size of the rooms, location, free morning papers delivered to the door
Monterey Hotel in Kyoto was an extremely comfortable stay and I would definately book there again. It is right across the road from the subway station, giving you access to many of the major sites in kyoto. It is also a small walk to the main shopping area (downtown) and gion (where you can spot geisha). The size of the room was big for Japanese standards, and extremely clean with a nice modern design.

Lovely, clean and comfortable rooms
I would definitely return to this lovely hotel. The staff was very attentive and helpful, not only about hotel matters, but helpful in finding restaurants or other needs we had within Kyoto. The room was quiet, very clean and, pleasantly decorated. The location is close to many attractions as well as transportation.

location is very central, concierge is good
room is definitely small, but decorating is cute
No complaints here, the lobby was nice and the concierge was helpful. The rooms are not luxurious by any means, but they are clean and decorated in a cute doll-house kind of way. There are several restaurants in the hotel, but we didn't try them.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Kyoto is a bus city, not subway. Get a bus map and a 500yen day pass from the concierge

The location of this hotel is perfect. The staff were very helpfull. Very good value for money.
can't say a bad word, it was a great hotel!
I selected this hotel because of the great reviews on Trip Advisor. The area is good with restaurants and very close to the main sights. The hotel is located approximately 2 minute walk from a subway station of Karasuma Oike.
The staff was very good in Gerneral. Many of the staff were excellent and extremely friendly and helpful.
Overall a pleasant stay and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Kyoto.
