We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It was close to the station, and had a free shuttle all day. The staff spoke English very well and were extremely helpful. It's also nicely decorated. The restaurants/bars are a bit pricey, so we didn't eat there. Kyoto station has loads of great options and Pontocho is 1,000yen cab ride away (all the taxi drivers knew the hotel by name).

Maybe twenty plus years ago this was a four star hotel... Rooms are basic and small. No wi-fi is available in the rooms and if you are lucky to get one of the eight chairs in the lobby you can use the wi-fi in the lobby. Some rooms do have LAN internet access available, our original two rooms did not and we had to move rooms since our package included internet access in our rooms.
Most annoying feature that is missing from rooms is the inability to control the temperature in our rooms. Our group had multiple rooms rented and found the heat to be too much. We slept at night with our windows opened and still sweated in our beds. Front desk was contacted multiple times with no resolution.
Hotel itself is located about 10-15 minutes by hotel shuttle bus from the train station. Very little to see , shop or eat in the neighborhood. We did enjoy the coffee shop, Royal Host, across the street that offered reasonable priced breakfasts.
I travel to Japan annually and have been to Kyoto numerous times. I intend to visit again, but will definately not be returning to this hotel.
