The Monterey Hotel in Kyoto is a very special hotel. It is magnificently designed and the rooms are very large (compared to the other hotels I have been in in Japan) and immensly comfortable.
The bathroom, which is important to me, is large and full of the latest gigs.
Breakfast is included here, which makes it very comfortable - no need to look for a Starbucks! There is a nice variety of foods, Japanese and Western breakfast, with everything one really needs. The location is also very good, 5 minute walk from the nearest JR line.
The staff is very friendly (as everywhere in Japan) and there is even a Cathedral where weddings take place.'The Library' is a lovely little restaurant which serves super afternoon tea at reasonable prices.
The owner of the hotel has his collection of paintings up on the walls and these include a couple of original Degas and Monet! There is one man whose job is to guard these paintings 24 hrs a day!
This is a very special hotel - not your usual run of the mill, American chain of hotels, but this Japanese hotel has a special ambience and style - all of the highest quality.

We found our stay enjoyable. The staff were helpful when we asked directions and for advice about boat trips. There were also nice touches such as a free paper in the morning. The decoration was nice, especially the lobby. We did not eat at the restaurant, but we did have breakfast and found there was plenty of food that we liked to choose from- Both Japanese and Western. Overall I would stay there again as it was centrally located and near a station.

The room was small, but not more so than your average Japanese hotel

A good hotel for a reasonable price. The hotel is close to Ginza mainstreet. Close to a subway station. From Tokyo station is it better to take a taxi, because there is not a direct subway line to the hotel. Close to hotel the is a Starbuck look a like where you can have a good breakfast.
Close to Ginza mainstreet
The hotelroom is small, but it's normal in Tokyo
- Restaurant Tip : Breakfast at a coffee-shop at 100 meters.

You'll be shocked at the level of techiness this hotel indulges in. It impresses on so many counts. From the ever helpful concierge, to the ultra chic dining interiors, to the very comfortable twin beds. You'll never be caught short on things to marvel at the first time u step into this hotel and venture around it. It isn't too far away from Kyoto Station and an easy cab ride away from the city centre and Kyoto's many temples.
great breakfast buffet spread. very comfortable room.
small room.

Overall we were very very impressed with this new property. Staff and facility far exceeded our expectations.
- Restaurant Tip : We decided one night we just wanted to pick-up some take-away and bring back to the room and "chill". We found nearby the basement Food Court at Daimaru Dept Store. Truly an amazing place; reminds us of Harrod's in London. We bought the freshest sushi, a bottle of Chardonnay, and desserts to die for. All this in our spacious room and fresh hotel pajamas made for a fantastic respite from a hard day of touring temples.

The hotel is very new. Much better than I was expecting for the price. The facilities are very good and the service is excellent. The rooms are a litlle small but not too bad for a Japanese's size room. The breakfast buffet included both Japanese and Western style selections. Lots of foreigner stay here. The location in the centre of the town and 5 minutes from subway station is a plus.
- Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : It's close to Nijo castle and imperial palace as well as Nishiki Market. Can walk to Gion and Pontocho Alley
